Sound proofing windows

Hi everyone, Many months ago someone started a thread asking about sound proofing windows. I can't remember who it was and I can't find the thread. I am curious what they eventually did. I'm also interested in anyone who has done DIY soundproofing of windows, did it work? Was it expensive? How hard/easy was it to install?

Re: Sound proofing windows

Double glazing with two different thickness of glass is the best way and depending on the frequency of the noise you want to block will determine what thickness is required.

next would be roller shutters and heavy curtains

a wall outside the window

Re: Sound proofing windows

Thanks for the reply hawk.

I've been looking at magnetic double glazing, which I think uses acrylic sheeting.  I don't want to block out anymore light than I already have (got heavy light blocking drapes).  Although roller shutters might be the cheapest option.

All this because a neighbour decides that playing loud doof doof music anywhere between 7am to 8.30am every weekday is ok.  And no I can't approach them directly, they are liable to tell me to get stoofed and then cause trouble

Re: Sound proofing windows

That sucks, doof doof will be very hard to stop as its a low frequency

Re: Sound proofing windows

Hi roo,

I remember that thread it was a lady whose Mum lived next to a noisy bowling club.

Here's the link I posted then for Magnetite retrofit double glazing.

Thanks hawk and icy, much appreciated.

I don't understand why people have to have music so loud

Low frequency bass music is almost impossible to attenuate satisfactorily, and I have a similar problem where I live.

Like yours, the offending neighbours have been highly unreceptive to requests to keep it down and as they retire relatively early (around 10pm), I've been reduced to retaliating in kind once I see their lights go out.

I only do it for 5-10 minutes as I don't want to put my other neighbours off-side, but they fully understand and appreciate my motives as they too are being equally annoyed by these selfish and ignorant cretins.

I'm certainly not recommending that you follow my example though, as there's every possibility that they could react adversely, as you've already indicated.

Re: Sound proofing windows

cq-tech....do you reply in kind with doof-doof music or classical.....say, 1812 overture?

Re: Sound proofing windows

Deb, I have a specific collection of Pink Floyd, Santana, Queen, and Yes tracks with some extremely loud low-frequency bass riffs which I boost with my graphic equaliser.

Aside from the cannon in Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, there's just not enough bass in classical music (perhaps with the exception of some of Gustav Mahler's works).

I have considered blasting them with the Seekers at times
