Well, you can believe the spin or listen to those who were there:

"Mother Teresa is famed for being one of history’s true altruists. She devoted her life to the poor, opening her first Missionaries of Charity home in 1950s Calcutta, and going on to open hundreds more across the world. As word of her mission spread, it caught the public imagination and millions of dollars began to pour in, all of which went to help those who needed it most. At least, that’s the official version.

The reality is far grimmer. According to those who’ve volunteered there, Mother Teresa’s missions are squalid cesspits run along violent, authoritarian lines. There are reports of unruly children being tied to beds and beaten, of outdated equipment not being replaced, and of needles being reused in countries with high HIV infection rates (such as Haiti) until they were so blunt they caused pain. All of this wrapped up in a culture of unquestioning obedience, secrecy, and control that is said to resemble a cult.

This might all be okay if the Missionaries were doing some good, but they’re not. In 1991, German magazine Stern revealed that only 7 percent of donations to the organization were used for charity. The rest was funneled into secret bank accounts or used to build more missions. There are reports that missions won’t even buy bread to feed their inmates, preferring instead to rely only on donated food."

Actually Jenny isn't in the wrong thread at all bob, if you were fighting in the name of God, then you would consider it a great thing to do.

Not a lot of good things done in the name of God outside of war come to mind.  Usually when it is a good thing the person or people like to take the credit and God is forgotten.

I think many great works have been done in the name of God, think of Mother Teresa for one.

Actually Mother Teresa ain't the best example. She did the poor no favours and made them suffer. All the millions given to her didn't go to those who needed the most. She was actually an Atheist.

Rubbish! she made them suffer? she fed them, clothed them, gave them health care. People of all faith, not just her own.

"By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus."

Actually she did, she told them the more they suffer the closer they're to God. Mind telling me despite she was given hundreds of millions of dollars. Where did the money go??? Obviously she didn't spend it on the people that came to her for help.

Re: THe Great Things done in the name of God.

Have you been there? have you or her critics been there and done what she and her workers did and still do?

I guess you think Christopher Hitchens is a decent human being? has he been there and done what they do?

I think the answer is no.

In any case I cannot see why anyone needs God to do good.  I do not.  I help people when I can, we give to charity of our choice; mostly to Médecins Sans Frontières, who actually do properly treat sick and injured people.

Re: THe Great Things done in the name of God.

Interestingly though, when Mother Theresa required medical aid, she flew to the US and elsewhere and did not trust the ministrations of her own

Wonder why that was ?

(quite apart from the funds she drew but did not spend on those for whom it was intended)

Re: THe Great Things done in the name of God.

I have learned to beware of anecdotal stories by disgruntled people and people  with an anti-Catholic or anti Religious agenda. They usually have an ulterior motive.................. and never give anything of themselves to anybody, unless it benefits them in some way.

Cataract surgery?? seriously?

True though by the same token not all bad things which happen are done in the name of God either.

I believe and can see that people can have a belief in God AND do good in his name too

Without acknowledging the good I'd be saying any belief in God is bad and makes people do bad things.

I don't believe that for a minute...nor do I believe that people who profess to have a faith in God don't do bad things...just like any other human being.

Human being often look for excuses for what they do wrong....I don't let them blame God.
