Right on Oppy. My family never took a penny from taxpayers, my mother worked full time and so did my father. They paid for our education (private),  they owned their own home and saved for their retirement.

I find  some of the posts here a bit insulting.  we all came here from somewhere, and we are all Australian, no-one is more Australian than anyone else although some seem to think they can judge others

My Family came out to Australia in the 1850ies, John Howlett Ross was my Great Uncle, we all came from some where to Australia or New Zealand and made it our home

Well I had no trade or professional qualifications, but I was young, single, female and white, so my value to Australia was clearly as breeding stock - and after 5 kids 10 grandchildren and 1 (almost 2) great grandchildren I reckon the country got a good return on  its investment.

Federal police have won a court application to keep a young man arrested in counter-terrorism raids in Sydney last week in custody for another 68 hours.

The 18-year-old has been held in custody without charge since Wednesday morning when he was arrested during a series of counter-terrorism raids across western Sydney.

He was one of four young men, aged between 16 and 22, who were arrested in connection with the execution-style shooting of police accountant Curtis Cheng outside the New South W Police headquarters in Parramatta on October 2.

Three of the men were released without charge the same day.

But the Australian Federal Police (AFP) successfully applied to keep the 18-year-old in custody for a further 100 hours last Thursday.

On Monday, they were granted an additional 68 hours to interview the teenager by a Sydney court.

Mr Karnib, his lawyer,  said that due to national security reasons he could not access the documents that the AFP used to make its application to the court.

The 18-year-old can now be held without charge until early Thursday afternoon.

The AFP cannot legally keep him in detention after that period unless they charge him with an offence.

i pushed kudo by accident on this

my parents were 10 pound poms (50 years ago) -dad got a job the week we arrived and was there until he retired due to ill heath died not long after and he lived on his savings 

mum had a few different jobs

they never claimed any handouts

and they NEVER winged about australia they LOVED it

so do i !!!! anyone who is lucky enought to live here should be gratefull everyday!!!!

Did your parents return to the taxpayer the child endowment, education allowance, etc, that they were given?

If they are still alive, do they receive any part pension, healthcare card etc.

Do they claim senior discounts?
