Thank you Mr Barnett

I'm not a fan of our current State Government, but Ido  believe in giving credit where credit is due and I was delighted to see the above headline in today's paper. It's not a huge offer,  but it's positive, it's proactive and it  makes me feel proud to be a Waussie.

As I see this thread it was started by a Western Australian poster who has seen what her state is doing to help in this crisis.

I am pretty sure that she is not going to nit pick when people in other states have something to add to the discussion involving efforts in other states to do their bit for the cause.

To me this needs to be an Australia wide effort if we are to make any impact on the problem at all.

It is going to be a rather short thread if the it can only be answered by Waussies because they know what the OP is talking about.

Maybe icy you should look at the bigger picture, not just what the OP says.   If you can't cope with interstate travel leave the thread to those who can.

Actually Lyndal, I was really hoping my thread would inspire other posters would have a look at what their states were doing and let us know.. We are so quick to criticise our pollies I think it's mportant to acknowledge when they do the right thing.

Re: Thank you Mr Barnett

The people (aggressive and horny young men who should be fighting for their country)  flooding Europe would probably find Mr Barnett's offer laughable and throw it off the tracks the way thew out the offer of food and water in Hungary

And still they gazed, and still the wonder grew,

that one small head could carry all he knew.

Re: Thank you Mr Barnett

This discussion is about what Australia may be able to do to help with the problem in Europe.

Personally I don't see it as a problem that revolves round Australia at all.   It is a European problem that Australia is offering assistance to cope with.

I don't remember too many offers of assistance from European countries to solve the problems of refugees/illegal immigrants coming to Australia.

Oh right. Maybe the "refugees" (horny and aggressive young men) are confusing Austria with Australia. They made it pretty clear, did they not, their goal was Austria or Germany. Not Hungary. Not Greece. Not omg where's that at Australia.

I didn't notice any offers forthcoming from Mr Barnett in WA at any time about that either, did you?

"I am of the view that Western Australia could easily accommodate up to 1,000 refugees,"

Mr Barnett urged Prime Minister Tony Abbott to lift the refugee intake in a one-off effort to help deal with the Syrian refugee crisis.

if WA can take up to 1,000, what should

the overall one-off intake be?

hopefully we'll hear from dutton soon.

Only 1000? WA is half of Australia!

Icy, most of WA is made up on the coast.  Would you like 30,000 of them dumped in the Great Victoria and the Gibson desert?

I'm not a fan of Kevin Barnett either, especially when he told schools that they didn't need airconditioning when they could open the windows.  Bear in mind we still sometimes get prefab classrooms in schools that are used in 40 degree heat.

I'd love it if we can accomodate at least a thousand of the Syrian refugees here.

There was also a lovely letter in today's West Australian for a Richard Charlesworth (I think he is Rick Charlesworth the ex hockey player and coach) offering to personally sponsor and assist a refugee family and challenging others to do the same.

How would he feel about sponsoring a group of young agressive men?

I imagine they would be a bunch of young very grateful men.

Australia was not just offering to give the refugees a home.  There was a suggestion of offering help to feed and house them in the camps while they were waiting for permanent placements.

Until the Australian authorities have had discussions with the European nations we can only guess at what help will be requested.

As for any offers for anything emanating from Mr Barnett in WA.....no, I have not heard a dicky bird but then I do live on the other side of the country and don't have time to make myself familiar with all goings on in all the states in Australia.

Most of the Australian refugee/immigrant issues were dealt with by the Federal Government and I only heard about how they affected NSW.

Anything else that I was interested in was usually discussed here on the boards....I believe that was the purpose of this thread....to start a discussion of what other states were thinking of doing/offering to do.

That would indeed be the natural thing to imagine, Joono, but some of the scenes posted here from youtube where we've seen ppl throwing away donations of food and water, and offers of refuge rebuffed, would indicate otherwise.
