Abbott’s deficit tax. Sacrifice or suicide?

My guest: Amanda Vanstone, former Howard Government minister and member of the Commission of Audit.

The panel: Michael Kroger and Cassandra Wilkinson.

NewsWatch: Rowan Dean.

So much to discuss: destroying the handout mentality, the deficit tax and growing corruptions scandals. Plus:  the menace of Clive Palmer’s money and the arrest of a man who quoted Churchill in public.

And this: is Labor’s what-budget-crisis? strategy clever politics or a reckless betrayal of the national interest?

Your Say and more.

The videos appear here.

"We’re only asking students to pay 50% of their course cost. They currently pay 40%. We’re hardly asking for the world-"

I did think it was a bit disingenous of him to say hadn't heard of the rape allegations against Mr Shorten. It must have been common knowledge in his circles.

Centre right of what exactly would find such comments, plans funny? I suppose the 6 months with no income every year for people under 30 without a job is also hilarious?

Oh really? I didn't see where he said that lol. Leastways not in this show. Can you point me to it pls? Did he mean that they were not here before the English prisoner colonists, or that they were not the first humans in Terra Australis?

I remember now that Gary Johns said yeah the aborigines where here first but that he felt that point was moot.

Yes I watched the show.  I like a laugh.

I had a laugh too, Joono, during Chis Pynes interview where they showed a video of students trying to burn an effigy of him. Except it kept going out, and Mr Pyne kept coming up smiling, god that was funny!

Man LOLCat LOLRobot LOLSmiley LOLWoman LOL

Yep I agree

and what he said is true

The Education Minister criticised university student protesters  – some of whom repeatedly tried and failed to burn an effigy of him last week – arguing the government simply wanted them to pay 50 per cent of their education costs. Students currently pay for 40 per cent of the cost of their course.

"We're hardly asking for the world," Mr Pyne said.

"They really don't have the kinds of problems that they are protesting about that deserve the burning of effigies. We're asking to pay 50 per cent of the cost of their education. We're not asking for their left kidney to be donated," he said.

mmm.....yes sounds fair nljs - what did pyne give? maybe a part of his brain?

Is the Minister for Education, Christopher Pyne, having a lend when he reckons it's fair to pay over $500,000 for the same degree he got for free.

The ear-marked deregulation will see Australian students pay at least as much as currently paid by international full-fee students according to Grattan Institute Higher Education program director Andrew Norton.

The Australian Financial Review’s Tim Dodd said that “prestige” degrees of Law and Medicine would see up to a 300 per cent increase. This is backed by modelling provided by the National Tertiary Education Union.

If I was Pynie I would not be worried about whether my cardboard effigy was burning properly.......I'd be checking fabric content on all that was in my wardrobe. Bin all the synthetics and blended garments for starters.

Turned the tv on and started watching the re-run as recommended (by Icy) from 4.06pm today 24/8/2014. Cannot watch anymore as of 4.12pm.

Bolts tv makeup looks like he has been sunbathing in sienna coloured mud!!

How does this bolt guy get/justify air time? Seriously boring and scripted and ......Whyney Pyney-what a myopic sick looking weed!! Talking about absolutely nothing too.

No useful info in 6 minutes . Certainly nothing on a Double Dissolution. Not a good recommendation Icy! Horrible tv time.

Tele is off.

Yeah, great show - to miss

More of Pyne's lunacy & threats.

The federal government will examine slashing billions of dollars worth of research funding from universities if Parliament blocks its sweeping higher education changes.

University vice-chancellors are alarmed by the "doomsday scenario", which they say would damage Australia's $10 billion export market for international university students.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne plans to introduce legislation into the House of Representatives on Thursday to deregulate university fees, cut course funding by an average 20 per cent and increase the interest charged on student loans.
