The Easily Offended

People today are so easily offended.

Its something we see on a daily basis on here from some,  people constantly state that they are offended by this or that or this post or that post and it’s something we see on a daily basis in the real world and on the news.   Someone always seems to take offense to minor issues and free speech and has to tell the world and tell us all that they are "OFFENDED" or take "OFFENSE" at this or that

One of the lessons that most of us learned at an early age was, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me."  When I grew up it wasn't called "bullying," it was called teasing and having a bit of fun at each other’s expense  and we grew thick skin from it and got on with life.  NOW so many people are offended by so many minor things.

Maybe today's world and the soft***** (soft roosters) need to grow a little thick skin  and stop being so easily offended by everything.

So thoughts, are some to easily offended and take offense to everything.

Thanks for that!

And now, it's off to Placation City - where everything is just peachy keen, where strong language is banned, offense is never given, (nor taken), insults are never heard, everyone lives in complete harmony, and all citizens are supplied with Rose-coloured Glasses, and the strongest drink is the lemonade sold by kids on the street corners!

Nice place to visit - but I wouldn't want to live there!

yep....it's like saying 'they upset me'....no one can upset you but yourself....it's self inflicted

???

OK, if somebody throws a rock through your window and you get upset ........ that is your fault?

If somebody tells you that you are fat & ugly and everybody laughs behind your back, and you feel hurt and upset ............ that is also your fault?

If somebody you trusted betrays you, and you are upset ............... you can only blame yourself?

NO, nasty people going out of their way to insult and hurt others, are despicable, and those doing it in media, be it press, radio, TV or Internet, are also creating or exacerbating problems in community.  It should not be acceptable.

Re: The Easily Offended

Someone further back said something about offence taking being part of the "it's all about me" movement or words to that effect. I think it the other way around.
I think it's the one that say "toughen up", "drink a spoonful of cement", "you're soft" or whatever, are the selfish ones. They are essentially saying their opinion or stance is the only one with validity and anyone that disagrees is deficient in some way.

I AM offended by grossly sexist comments. I AM offended by racism. I AM offended by inequality. I make NO apology for being what I consider a compassionate person. And anyone telling me that makes me soft or selfish can go to buggery!

Re: The Easily Offended

I would say it is the other way round, people taking offence on behalf of others.

So are you offended just in general or only when it is said to someone else ?

If so, that means it's not about "me", it's about "them".

You take offence on behalf of someone else because you don't like the comment, remark etc,

even though they themselves might be OK with said comment, remark ?

As for you "And anyone telling me that makes me soft or selfish can go to buggery! "

That is just another way of saying "toughen up", "drink a spoonful of cement", "HTFU" ?

Yes, no ?

Do you protest against

Muslims and how they treat women and make them dress and not allow them to be educated or drive ? (Sexism and inequality)

Aborignies for being racist ?

If not, why not since you are offended by those things.

"I AM offended by grossly sexist comments. I AM offended by racism. I AM offended by inequality."

I think that to some extent, we all are offended by these. But just what is offensive to you, and what is acceptable humour?

Where exactly do we draw the line, segregating humour from offensive?

Every person processes information differently - ask 10 witnesses to a car accident, and you'll get 10 differing viewpoints.

As a security offcer many years ago, I was actively encouraged NOT to take the word of eye witnesses, as they were notoriously unreliable.

Indeed, why do Police need to take so many witness statements at a crime scene? To better average out the truth, from distortion.

So with so many alternative interpretations...where do we draw the line?

I'd hate to think we offered a mandate to government to legislate - they have a nasty habit of knee-jerk reactions, and swinging too far to accomodate the most vociferous ones.

I'm all for being offended by racial vilification, religious fervour, pedophilia, rape, murder, etc, etc, but...I think the real question is - what do we do about the offense? Do we take issue with it? or do we meekly turn the other cheek - all the while complaining that we think it's offensive? And look for the next Outrage Busstop?

Re: The Easily Offended

I think we all accommodate the views of others, one problem I see is those who are VERY PC orientated and / or offended try to impose on others those same views.

Just an observation.
