Has anyone else read this? Booker Prize winner 1997.
I'm halfway through and i don't know if I love it or hate it.
The prose is exquisite but i do find it confusing.with all the characters and time changes.

I just read the synopsis.
Sorry, but I think I would hate it.
Is it slow going?

I am struggling to appreciate it also. Many might not agree with me, but I think the standard of writing is quite lacking in maturity ..

From here - an harrowing experience - ie reading - I would not cheerfully - undertake.

Sawks I find it slow going as it's so confusing. You're dealing with unfamiliar Indian names for a start and so many are thrown at you in the beginning it's confusing..... for me it was anyway. Then there's the going back and forth from one time to another. I think to read it best to have a pencil and paper and write down who everyone is.
Tas I know what you mean. I find myself thinking some of it is beautiful, then getting impatient with it.
I haven't read many Booker prize winners but I just hated The Life of Pi, also The english Patient. Loved The Remains of the Day, but that's all.

Yes, I read it, Bright.
It's amazing how it unravels. Unravels is a good word for the way the author tells the story, I think.
A bit of a culture shock, to be sure.
Well worth reading to the end, when it all becomes clear.
Beautifully written by Arundhati Roy. I love Indian authors

Yes Icy I've finished it and it does fall into place at the end . That last chapter is heartbreakingly beautiful.
I still wish the author had made it all a little more clear during the book.
I find myself thinking about it a lot and am going to re-read it when I've made a dent in all the To Read books on my list.
I do agree with you about Indian writers, I love them too. .

One of my faves and in the movie, two of my favorite actors.

Couldn't agree more Bright.ton. I might get back to it later.
If there is one thing I intensely dislike in literature, when it occurs, is page after page ad nauseam of long winded waffle which only has the purpose of lengthening the story/information and subsequently loses what it starts out to say as meaningful.
There are so many authors doing that, perhaps not intentionally, but there it is. Perhaps it's a writer cultural thing; who knows where that will lead to given the evolution of "tech-texting" ...
