Gonski school funding: NSW Government plans to fight changes to deal

Updated 22 minutes ago

The New South Wales Government says it will fight any changes to the "Gonski" school funding agreement it struck with federal Labor before the election.

New federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne has said the Coalition cannot go ahead with the "Gonski" funding arrangements and will go back to the "drawing board".

He insists the total amount of money allocated to schools funding will not change, but the way in which it is delivered is now uncertain because final deals had not been signed with some states.

But his NSW counterpart Adrian Piccoli says it has a "binding agreement" that must be honoured.

"NSW expects the Commonwealth to fulfil its obligations under this agreement," he said in a statement.

"NSW will not agree to returning to the broken SES funding model. The new funding model has secured additional resources for classrooms across NSW, with the majority going to schools in most need."

They have a major reform committment. Aside from resources aimed at numeracy/literacy, there is a large push to put resources to the most unerfunded and disadantaged schools in the state particularly out west and in rural nsw.

They have already budgeted for next year and the funding has been allocated. As I imagine all the education departments have.

uh uh

what is the gonski funding for?

what funding is it providing for use in 2014? I mean for immediate benefit - stuff that benefits the kids NEXT year - not long term framework

also, is it only NSW that is spitting the dummy atm?

Why do I have to google this for you? It's all there.. Here is NSW school reforms starting in 2014.  http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au/about-the-department/our-reforms. You just have to follow all the links to see exactly what is being implemented. As much as I dislike what OFarrell is doing in the rest of the state, their schools program is really detailed.Whilst they don't go into the detail on how much they are spending on blue pens as opposed to black pens, it is all available information.

No it isn't NSW. Victoria is in the same boat as NSW. And Tasmania has a big issue with the fact that their agreement never got the final sign off and they are spitting chips (no pun intended) that Federal Liberal Government is ignoring them.

I heard that this morning. The states must be furious. Particularly given how tough the negotiations were.

What devastating decision for the Australian public education system.

How can you say that before we know what changes are proposed?

Exactly.  They are still committed to the $2.8bn funding, aren't they?

NOt according to the news this morning. It was clear that Pyne was saying he would not be introducng the funding set aside for Gonski program and that they would be reviewing public education programs and funding.

good, maybe they can make it so that an equal and just eduication is available and acccessible to ALL children, and I am pretty sure that is supposed to be for free.

Ask the schools at bedourie, Mt Isa (Barclay), Ciooktown, FNQ, and here on the Gold Coast how those $3 million dollar buildings are going, the grants for science and sports facilities, oh, and the solar panels (in the schools), the free laptops, and we just had another funding rollout too for libraries....  ask how well those programs were managed and administered.

Re: The Gonski in doubt ...back to the drawing board ?

Most schools are governed by parent com ittee (well here anyway) so any funding goes to whatever is needed as martini said up there that you also refuse to believe. Why dont you call some schools if you want more in depth anwsers. Posters here can not say how individual school will or wont use their funding. While you're at it, call the age newspaper and the NSW DECS who said the first part of the funding would be release in 2014 as they are obviously in the wrong too. Sheesh

You dont like the public system we get that.

Can you please, PLEASE go and read up about what the Gonski report is all about? You might actually get a bit of a shock.

If you are so interested in free and fair education, you might also want to google the nonsense that Pyne has put forward over the last 2 years. Particularly his laughable conspiracy theories about communits running the school curriculum.

And as for the money being spent at those schools you listed, seeing as I can't 'ask' those schools then perhaps you can tell me what the issue is? I've googled all of those things and nothing has come even remotely related to your comments. My experience is that all of our local schools have spent their money wisely and with enormous benefit. No-one that has a child that actually goes to school has complained as far as I can see from news resports.

Can't find what you are talking about on most of those things but:

The only thing I can find about Bedourie schools is that the State government is spending money to sure up their flood defences. Not sure what the issue is with that.

Can't find anything negative about science and sports facilities funding. Not sure what the issue is. Ditto with libraries.

I did find something about solarpPanels in qld schools. It was/is a Qld state govemt funded initiative. The programe makes sense and seems to be going well. Even the newspapers seem to be positive. So not sure what the issue is here.

I seriously don't understand what you are trying to say and how this relates to Gonski. Particularly seeing as Qld State  governments were one of the few dumb dumbs that didn't sign up for the Gonski funding model.
