The Gonski in doubt ...back to the drawing board ?

Gonski school funding: NSW Government plans to fight changes to deal

Updated 22 minutes ago

The New South Wales Government says it will fight any changes to the "Gonski" school funding agreement it struck with federal Labor before the election.

New federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne has said the Coalition cannot go ahead with the "Gonski" funding arrangements and will go back to the "drawing board".

He insists the total amount of money allocated to schools funding will not change, but the way in which it is delivered is now uncertain because final deals had not been signed with some states.

But his NSW counterpart Adrian Piccoli says it has a "binding agreement" that must be honoured.

"NSW expects the Commonwealth to fulfil its obligations under this agreement," he said in a statement.

"NSW will not agree to returning to the broken SES funding model. The new funding model has secured additional resources for classrooms across NSW, with the majority going to schools in most need."

Re: The Gonski in doubt ...back to the drawing board ?

new enrolments have had orientation day here, JP have met and spent time in their new class for next year and new families have been given the tour. I was part of the process, thats how I know (for my school) majority of SSO's have their timetable or are getting it by this friday (different school)

And, how do you know about that? Why does this teacher require funding provided by the Gonski?

they were free to negotiate packages to suit individual schools and thats what happened here. one would expect some to get it wrong, but i carefully avoid those schools. like everything, some people are better administrators than others. whats the alternative ? a central committee with a one size fits all approach ?

is this about the school halls? sorry I'm a bit lost

but yes, some are better administrators. So many schools didn't even get their school hall money because they didn't apply properly - apparently there was some special process, and some of the schools that really needed A school hall of any description, missed out, whilst ones that had good administrators, got funding for all sorts of stuff that they didn't need.

Don't get me wrong, it is all appreciated, and speaking for my community here, we love that we got so much free money, we have truly brilliant facilities, some of which were already planned and budgeted for in the future, so now we can use that money for other stuff iykwim, but there are so many schools who just missed out on so much that needed the bare minimum, just to give the kids a fair chance.

on the lap tops - one community here in FNQ and one in Cooktown, they got their laptops, and when a lot of the kids took the computers home, their parents sold the computers etc, or they were not looked after and broken etc, and there was no money to fix and/or replace and there was no system put in place to make sure this happened.

The money was great for all the funding, but it just could have been better managed to make sure that those who really needed it to make a real difference to their education got decent access to it and use of it.

Gonski does not provide funding for short term classroom funding of any kind, staff, curriculum or equipment for 2014

and what happens if your new enrolments move district, or new kids move into the district in your zone?

Funding Day is Day 8 of the new school year. That is when schools can submit their enrolments etc and have their funding approved.

Otherwise a school that is expecting 500 kids, might only get 300 actually turn up and they would get excess funding....

we are talking non selective public schools here, aren't we?

although Funding Day is the same nationally across all three funding structures, none of which include any Gonski money for 2014./

 Your bad.

Funding for teachers would not be tied into the Gonski funding. Someone's telling porkies.
