Gonski school funding: NSW Government plans to fight changes to deal
Updated 22 minutes ago
The New South Wales Government says it will fight any changes to the "Gonski" school funding agreement it struck with federal Labor before the election.
New federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne has said the Coalition cannot go ahead with the "Gonski" funding arrangements and will go back to the "drawing board".
He insists the total amount of money allocated to schools funding will not change, but the way in which it is delivered is now uncertain because final deals had not been signed with some states.
But his NSW counterpart Adrian Piccoli says it has a "binding agreement" that must be honoured.
"NSW expects the Commonwealth to fulfil its obligations under this agreement," he said in a statement.
"NSW will not agree to returning to the broken SES funding model. The new funding model has secured additional resources for classrooms across NSW, with the majority going to schools in most need."

If I don't like the care or service that one doctor is giving me, I can't then get really crook and blame the government, that doesn't help me, it doesn't make me any healthier. I take a bit of responsibility for myself and I find one that meets my needs.I don't wait for a month or a year etc demanding my gov fixes or trains someone etc, I act now. I take responsibility for myself now.
Education is no different.
All this extra funding - it's the cream - it's what makes it even better, not the flour to bake the cake.

its not a sense of entitlement, its merely a desire for Pyne to keep his promises. today he reneged on the election promise and committed to one year only. meaning, pre election he Lied.

Something else I don't get.
People seem so intent on blaming the government , which maybe they should, but how does that help your kids?
If yr remark refers to this topic as it's being discussed..this may help you .
from a Gov't students fact sheet.
Ministerial responsibility
Ministers are accountable for the actions of their department; if something goes wrong they are expected to take responsibility for it.
Ministers are answerable to the Parliament. Any member of parliament can examine and criticise the government through the work of each minister. All ministers must be able to stand up in Parliament each day during Question Time and answer questions about how the government is running Australia (see Question Time).
http://www.peo.gov.au/students/fact_sheets/ministers_shadow_ministers.html
As the Australian public can't just change and move on to a new Education Minister when he/she doesn't do the right thing by his/her people (as a parent might with a school for their child)
It helps that Ministers are expected to have accountabilty for what they say and do while in that position
..being paid by us and to do a job for us.
That's what I'm talking about

I have been going through my paperwork and found
The pre-election Liberal campaign advertising Real Solutions Plan which I received in the mail
under education (pg 3):
Deliver a better education
10: We will deliver better school outcomes, encourage better teachers, better teaching and give principals, communities and parents a greater say over schools
*we will match dollar for dollar commitments already made by the Federal Government for schools over the next 4 years
*we will strengthen higher education and invest in job skills training
*we will give more support to apprentices to help them complete their training
Choose Real Change: A stronger Government A Stronger Australia
a strong Government should be able to speak and be spoken about ...

You still haven't read the recommendations or understood what the Gonski report is about have you?
It's not about EXTRA funding. It's not about people wanting more ENTITLEMENTS. It's not about providing extra services or programs. It's not about parents taking responsibility/action for their kids education and moving them to schools that suit them better.
It is about bringing our education standards up to an acceptable level. ACCEPTABLE.
It is about ensuring kids get fair and equitable education regardless of geography. Regardless of socio economic circumstances. Regardless of size of classrooms.
Why? Because our education funding went off course about 2 decades ago.
And the gross result is schools that have been SEVERELY underfunded, teachers that are OVERWHELMED and UNDEREDUCATED, resources that are NON-EXISTENT.
The net result is that the education standard of our kids in public schools is so poor that we now have a generation of kids who cannot read and write and count to satisfactory levels as set out by OECD standards.
Yet at the same time we have poured more money and resources into a private system that didn't need the funding in the first place.
The disaster this has created is a massive imbalance between kids who have the luxury of parents who can afford (financially or geographically) to send their kids to a private school as opposed to children who are leaving high school with a reading age of 12.
So unless you are advocating that education is only for those children who are fortunate enough to come from rich, white skinned, city based parents then I suggest you read the findings in the Gonski report so that you understand what is going wrong in our education system today and then you might actually stop talking nonsense.

Martini, again I say, education is not a federal responsibility.
The constitution says that Education is a State responsibility.
It doesn't matter what the Ghonski report says, it doesn't even matter what the Bible says or what Bozo the Clown says - The Constitution puts the responsibility of Education squarely on the shoulders of the States.
So if our education standards are not at an acceptable level, it is the individual States who have failed.
Soooo, now look at section 96 of the Constitution. What does that tell you?
Why has the Commonwealth Gov entered into education at all? and how have they done it? They cannot do it or impose anything without State consent.
The Federal Gov wants the States to do something, so they offer some free money in return, but this money comes with strings and it must be bargained for. So, what did the Staes who did sign actually agree to? Why are there States who wouldn't sign at all, and still others whose negotiations were not at the stage the deals were sealed?
Why haven't those states said "yep, education is sooooo important that we will do whatever you want us to do if you just give us some money? What did they think was more important than education, that they wouldn't give up?
It is the States that have let education down, not the Federal Gov (of any party) You say they have poured money into the private system? well a) thank God they did because otherwise my kid would not have gotten any education, far l;ess a fair one (and there are many others) but b) did you ever think the private school sector may have secured funding because they were prepared to meet the governments requirements? Anyway, the private vs public debate is a separate discussion, as the fact remains, without private funding there would be even more strain on the Public System and as most of them would not exist, and then the government would be responsible for the FULL COST of educating even more kids, but anyway, another discussion.
I understand very well what is going on with Gonski, thank you VERY much. And I am very aware of what has gone wroing in our education system.
and everything I said stands.
I have one of the kids who was refused an equitable education in the Public System, and there is another poster on these boards who has 2 children in an even worse situation than that. At least they were prepared to put mine into an SEU and teach him how to tie his shoe laces - even though he was capable of so much more (as evidenced by his OP 2 last year) If I wanted my kid to get the education I wanted, I had NO choice, and neither did the other member. And I am positive there are others on here as well, who have had to do things suchg as resort to home Schooling and Distance education etc.
The facts are that the education system does NOT suit everybody, for whatever reasons, but there is no point waiting for the government to fix that, WE as parents and carers and guardians have to be proactive NOW. because blaming the government or the pony in the circus is not going to help our kids get the kind of education which they need or deserve.
It is the States who are not educating our kids, it is NOT the Federal Gov"s responsibility. and the failure of our education system is largely attributed to mismanaged funds, especially in recent years as I have previously given examples of.
You keep going on about the Gonski Report... that's all it is - a report.
They paid barely any attention to the IPP report, why aren't you concerned about that?

The Liberals (under Abbott) will not implement the most crucial aspects of this review. Abbott has already made that perfectly clear.
According to Abbott he has no intention of putting in place the key elements of the Gonski report.

Was all that on your pre-election info?

Geez - they have not withdrawn the money, the Federal Gov is simply reviewing how it is to be adminsitered and distributed.
And I think that is a fair call based on how previous monies have been distributed. I'd want to make sure my money was being spent wisely as well.
The States are NOT a Charity, the money is NOT a gift. The money has to be bargained for and a responsible government will do their best to ensure that it is administered and distributed effectively and efficiently for the best outcome for everyone.
