The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Good morning all, back again after more modem trouble... every time I vanish this will be the problem... gosh I am tired of it.

Yes, I think knees can be a bit of luck of the draw.  Most people I know who have had them done seem to be okay, but maybe it also depends on the doctor who does it.

Also they now actually take an image of your knee joint which is sent off to America where a prosthesis is made to match exactly where the problem joint is being removed.  This is new and I only know about it because a friend had it done a few months ago and she said it is fabulous.  Her first knee did give her trouble for some time before it settled down.

Gosh grandmoon both hips at one... WOW! top marks to you, I'm impressed 🙂

Yes panda I felt so sorry for him and often wonder how he is coping with the pain he has... I would have taken the risk and thought, 'well the pain is not likely to be any worse than this' and have given it a go.

What a lovely day you must have had kwozie with all the old records.  I gave mine away sadly, but then I don't have a record player any longer..

Hahaha grandmoon I'm not sure I believe you about leaving bub in the pram hanging on a hook on the bus :^O

Kaye when we ran out of chalk for hopscotch I nabbed a bar of sunlight soap and you won't believe it, but that game stayed on the pavement for months and months.

Oh Kaye that is so sad about your sister... 😞

YAYYY your first snipe... Yes you get a kiss  X 🙂

JV I hope you have a great time with your aunt and uncle, and a lovely break from trying to sell the house...

See ya later 🙂

Well I am having to retrain my dogs after the neighbours gave Harry the impression they were the enemy... now he barks and rushes up and down the fence line every time they appear outside.

Of course it's all my fault and nothing to do with them rushing at the fence waving their arms and shouting at him... sigh... we'll get there I expect.

Lovely day down here, would love to get out into the garden and mow but as it is the weekend I will give the neighbours the chance instead as I have the five week days without them when all is very quiet and peaceful.

If I vanish it will be the modem again, otherwise see ya later 🙂

Many a true word spoken in jest, Richo!

It's nice having a seniors thread to use expressions that a lot of the youngsters have never heard of.

eg. a tiger in your tank

grabbing a tiger by the tail

etc.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Has anybody else noticed that even after over 400 postings, this thread remains warm, friendly, and respectful.  Is it because we have shared history and life experiences?  Or is it the times in which we grew up?

I have enjoyed every post, and getting to know (and like) every poster.

Thank you so much Darki.

When I went to primary school we didn't have a uniform.

When my children started school in Victoria all primary schools had the same uniform.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Did anyone have a fave movie star?  I was crazy about Alan Ladd, nuts about him, and later Dirk Bogarde (still am).  Loved Greer Garson .....cried buckets over  Goodbye Mr Chips.

Also loved Lana Turner, I would have given anything to look like her.

I also adored Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy.... their movies were soooo romantic.
