The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 ๐Ÿ™‚

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here ๐Ÿ™‚

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Do you remember when the postman came around twice week day, and on Saturday morning, with his satchel full of letters on his back?  All the postmen were called 'Speedy'.

And taking a billy can to the local shops to buy milk.  You could swing the filled billy can around on your way home, in a big perpendicular arc and not spill the milk.....well, sometimes anyway.

Gill, going out with a visiting R & R was also so innocent in those days.  How things have changed.

I drove to Sydney from Kurrajong to find some to take home.

Collected five of them at the Cross and they stayed the night at my country property .(with offficial permission)

It was the first time they had been in a family home for two years.

My husband at the time drove them back to the Juno? the following morning. They were thrilled to be with us and kept in touch for many years.

O yes, do I miss the violet crumble bars, and polly waffles.  There was also a bar I loved..... always had to have it for the movies...  called White Knight.  It was nougat coated with chocolate and took ages to eat.

I do remember the old money but never heard of a trey.  perhaps it's a State thing?

And the postman.... remember how he always blew his whistle when he'd delivered some mail.  How exciting for mum who was British and homesick and longed for mail from all her rellies.

Darki how funny your grandad teaching you to eat peas off a knife.

He was norty. :^O

Yes, I also loved the square dance....and the  barn dancesI  , where you didn't have to wait for someone to ask you.  I used to hate arriving at a dance with my girlfriends, and my heart leaping when a cute boy walked over, ...then he'd ask my girlfriend.

Big waves to everyone.

I remember the White Knight bars, but I didn't like them much because you didn't really get to eat them so much as gnaw at them.

I remember when I was little (late 60s) my mum buying a Frys Cream Bar. We thought it was awful and that she was mad. But it was one of her 'old fashioned' favourites.

Never cared for Violet Crumbles. Don't you think the Crunchie bars are much better?

I loved White Knight bars and what about Choo Choo Bars.

You can still get White Knight Bars, the local supermarket near me has them, I have been tempted to buy one, but then thought better of it, as I may break my teeth.

I prefer Violet Crumbles........

Yes I mourn the passing of Violet Crumble bars too grumpy, I think it was my Dad that shared the first one I ever had with me.  Proper Freddo Frogs too, can't be bothered with the rubbish nowadays ...

Do you remember the old Arnotts biscuit tins with the picture of - was it? - a girl looking at a girl... can't remember now, but it used to capture me because it went on and on as if she was looking in a mirror... can anyone help me?

And the Rosella tins with the parrot?

Who remembers the 'modern' Kookaburra stoves?  Still love the old wood stove cooking more tho.

The Rosella tins with the Parrot.

And the smell of the Rosella Tomato Sauce factory as the train passed the Richmond Train Station going to Melbourne.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

Does any one remember some of the old biscuit names? - Yo-Yo's and proper Bush Biscuits that cost 3 pence (a trey bit it was called).- 3 inches long a bit over 2 wide and a good 1/4 of an inch thick. I used to buy them on the old Jetty at Semaphore in South Aussie - one was a meal for a six year old. And Freddo Frogs? - proper ones - not like the junk you get these days - if you can still get them at all. What about the old currency nicknames - trey, sixpence, a bob, two bob, ten bob and a quid? I wonder how many remember when petrol was 2 bob a gallon? I still mourn the passing of Violet Crumbles and Polly Waffles. Yep - I do ramble on ๐Ÿ™‚

I was only thinking about Bush Biscuits the other day and you could onlky buy them in Adelaide.......I lived in Norwood.

The Freddo Frogs tasted heaps better back then than they do now.

Also Mint Leaves lollies, the taste today doesnt even resemble the original taste of Mint Leaves.

I also remember the old jetty at Semephore.

Since I have lived down here in the Hobart area I discovered the old IXL factory was situated on the waterfront down here.  They used to send their jams to the men on the front in WWII...

Who else remembers the old IXL jams?

It's not there any longer ๐Ÿ˜ž

gosh it's been warm down here today... it is only 23หš but feels far more like 28หš Nice outside where there's a breeze but not funny where the breeze doesn't reach you.

Have a good evening everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

Sigh :_|  If I vanish again it is because my phone/internet has crashed again.

I have the internet but not the phone and I am getting right tired of it, so might take my phone account back to telstra.

If I do that then I will be off line for a couple of days while all the settings are change in the exchange... it is all far more than I ever wanted to know ๐Ÿ˜ž

See thee anon xxxx
