The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 ๐Ÿ™‚

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here ๐Ÿ™‚

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Gill, you grew up in Wingham. What a beautiful town. You are so lucky growing up there, with that stunning countryside. Roads to get there are a bit iffy. I tootle along in my wee two seater convertible, always check the rear vision mirror to make sure no bits have fallen off. LOL.

Some of the potholes have been there so long they should be declared sacred sites.

Two of my favourite towns are Wingham and Gloucester.

I have aa holiday cottage on the coast, but I seem to be spending 90% of my time there and not on the Sydney northern beaches.

Hnmmmm. I wonder why. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I replied earlier but it seems some posts are going awol.

Miss Preston was headmistress when I was there - we used to have our lunch in the old Bear Pit - was previously the Zoo LOL

Beautiful grounds - dreadful uniform - brown tunic and the most awful beret for the winter and panama hat in summer. heaven help us if we didnt wear our gloves or hat. Used to get the tram from Central Station.

You were just ahead of me Rosie. I left in 1962 and Miss Wayne was only there for the last couple of years.

I loved the beret...still have a studio portrait of myself wearing it.  Mum had it hand coloured....quite expensive in those days.

Hated the panama hat though.

I rather liked the brown uniform as it set us apart from most other schools who all had the conventional navy blue.  I think SCEGGS Darlinghurst was the only other school that had something different, royal blue I think.

The bear pit was out of bounds in the last few years as it was starting to fall down.  But it did stand the test of time...it was still there when my daughter went there in the 80s.

Did the old duckpond (the lower grounds) flood while you were there?

Was Olga Bobroff the music teacher in your day...she of the stilletto heels?  Years later I came across her as the headmistress of Moorefields Girls High at Kogarah where my youngest went. And as we predicted, she had been crippled by the high heels as she was wearing orthopedic lace up shoes.

Re: The Seniors Thread :-)

I dont remember the music teacher - Mr. Winder was the Art Teracher - he finished up some bigwig in the Ed Dept.

I left at Intermediate Cert. level.

My sister went to Fort Street - you can imagine the rivalry between us - she was a couple of years younger than me.

Dont remember any floods while I was there.  I have no photos either - I do keep in touch with one girl from high school.

Me too grandmoon , though David Niven played in a James Bond movie not so long ago (we.....ell maybe 20 yrs ago) , I think it was a spoof on James Bond?

Yes I'd heard Audie  Murphy was highly decorated ... I was surprised as I thought his movies were soppy, he was always sitting on a horse and singing, and we kids just wanted to watch the cowboys fight the indians.

I loved Dirk Bogarde too, I've been listening to readings of his book on 3rph (Vic)  and he also fought in the war.  What a talented man he was, apparently during the war he was made official war artist (something like that), and his books are written so well.   A piece of eye candy too, though weren't they all lol.

Hi all, just going to bed but thought I'd say Good night first...

Yes Audie Murphey was the most decorated war hero... actually I don't think he did cowboy films he did do To Hell And Back, which was a war film.

Here is a write up on him if you're interested, he really was quite a brilliant and brave man.

Well I'm yawning my head off.  The phone isn't fixed yet but they seem to have been able to sort out the internet which is good.

See ya in the morning xxx
