Re: The babies have left the nest

I had a bit of a suprise a few weeks ago at my remote farm. I was watering the pot plants and hanging baskets when a Mallee Whip Bird flew from one of the hangers. She had made a nest in the hanging basket, under the porch, right by the front door and had laid two eggs in the nest  I used the back door for a few weeks and last week when I was up there, the two baby Whip birds where fluttering around the garden.

A family of swallows also live and nest in the garage and they have raised chicks again this year. The only resident wild life I,m not so happy about is the Brown Snake that lives in the firewood pile. I keep right away from him. I,ve had two Red Belly Black snake bites in the last few years, but they are not a big drama. A brown snake bite, alone on a remote farm with very marginal mobile phone coverage could be a bit more of a worry.

Re: The babies have left the nest

I had to ride a motorcycle through knee high grass in swampy country again today and then clamber down a creek bed through trees and shrubs to check whether a fence had been washed out during winter flooding. Having been bitten by a snake after riding over it with the motorbike in similar circumstances last year, it was actually quite daunting. Im getting too old for this sort of excitement, but unfortunately cant afford to end the lease on the property. I suppose I will just keep rolling the dice for another year and hope for the best..
