Every morning I drop my daughter & dog at my parents. Dad is retired & mum works part time. They take my daughter to school & pick her up (very greatful), and I figured the dog would prefer spending the day with my parents to being alone. This has been going on for 2.5 years.
Last week I found a photo of the dog before my dad retired & did the school run. The dog was so slim! I hadn't realised how fat he was.
I asked my mum to please stop feeding him, as he gets dry food & bones at our home & that's enough.
Since last week my daughter told me that my mum has continued to give him rice bubbles for breakfast (her reason: they bonded over food), she gave him a huge pile of roast lamb on Sunday (her reason: he deserved a treat after his dieting during the week), Monday: spaghetti bolognese (her reason: he really wanted a taste), tonight: taco beef (her reason: he wont love her if she stops feeding him).
I said (crossly) that the dog will never lose weight if she keeps feeding him & he'll remain fat - her answer (quote) "he's not fat, he's just cuddly".
He's fat! And he's going to stay that way.
She is obsessed with feeding a fat dog!
Arghh .... I love my mum, but this is ridiculous. She spends more time feeding a fat dog, than her human family members!
Note: she also keeps buying him little sweaters, that don't fit cause he's fat, and then she says they are incorrectly sized.
😖

I also love this thread. My two cents worth, dont feed the dog at home anymore. It might seem cruel to you, but hey you're clearly caring for and loving the little fluff ball by taking him to your mums every day so he doesn't have to spend the day alone. Thats really lovely and it sounds like your mum really loves the dog and appreciates you bringing it over. And one thing I do know is unfortunately it's Grandmas house so Grandmas rules, feeding the dog is something she gets enjoyment from, and if you stop feeding him at least the dry food at home he will lose some weight.
My mum buys the most impractical presents. I know that sounds rude like looking a gift horse in the mouth but honestly she's forever buying me clothes that dont fit and gifts that I just dont have to room to "display" For example we went to a cafe recently and they had two of those glass nantucket beverage dispensers that looked lovely in the shop and it was a nice touch by the cafe to offer complementary fruit flavoured water to ther customers. I happened to mention how much I liked the look of them, (at no point did I say I wanted one for my place, I have nowhere to put it and unless one does alot of entertaining, which I dont it's kinda useless to me) but still she bought me one for my birthday... It's still sitting in the box...

We kind of have that rule here....... my house my rules but I do try to abide by the rules at their home too.....
I have a sign,
Grandma's house, children spoiled while you wait.
The dogs are another matter, they are so spoiled at home that I draw the line at any more excess!

You could always lay the guilt trip on her,(just tell her that for every kilo that's he's overweight his life expectancy
is reduced by three, four or 6 months),
Visit a vet clinic and they may have literature that will back that up,
Also human food can give them all sorts of problems/allergies so it's not healthy for them.

Either don't feed the dog at home or leave the dog at home.
I don't feed my dog very much at home because I know that she will get bikkies and scraps of food at my parents place.

My dog is a tiny chi x 3-4 kg max and very greedy. She'd look like a balloon with toothpicks for legs with all mum's 'its only a little bit'
