Are We Descending Into Barbarism?

An Australian socialist group has withdrawn newspapers depicting Tony Abbott getting his throat cut by a straight razor.

The grisly Red Flag cover, which was accompanied by the headline "One cut we'd like to see, attracted more than 200 comments – most of them negative – on publisher The Socialist Alternative's Facebook page overnight.

"Oh ... not cool. I'm no fan of the LNP — policies, parties, associates or leader — but this seems unnecessarily violent," one post read.

Another said: "dreadful picture. DO NOT CONDONE violence to anyone. Even Abbott. You LOST me off this page and as a supporter."

The group released a statement this morning defending the Michael Callaghan-inspired cover, but said "legal concerns" meant they would be withdrawing it all the same.

How long before we become like the US and the Middle East where democratically elected leaders are deposed and/or assassinated?

Four senior ministers in the Abbott government have been assigned  secret-service style protection amid an angry backlash over the federal budget, while a fifth minister is also receiving personal protection over specific threats.

The unprecedented ramp-up in security measures has seen Treasurer Joe Hockey,  Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Education Minister Christopher Pyne and junior Defence minister Stuart Robert assigned Close Personal Protection officers from the Federal Police in the month since the budget.

Good morning.

Not surprising they need protection when the sort of incitement to murder is offered to our politicians. Seen also on some of the banners in the recent March in March.

The Socialist Alernative graphic however, takes the cake. So far.

It's not that it suits the left. It is simply that this is not new nor is it shocking because the country has seen worse because we became immune to it during Abbotts time in Opposition. During this time, the bar was lowered to apalling standards.

What is different about this is that this image is in a minority newspaper that no-one wil see. The depictions of Gillard were in the mainstream press.

Icy I'm just as likely to read that as I am to read anything by bolt or pickering. I haven't seen it, haven't clicked on the link, not interested in  that propaganda rubbish stuff, but that sort of thing has been around for a long time, before abbott it was JG & Rudd who used to cop nonsense like that

Sickening and appalling, just like a lot of the stuff going on in radical left wing rags.

I cannot get over this blind bias that is out there, one only has to read some comment, even on here, it's infected everything in social media.

Tony Abbott does not deserve this type of stuff, even too sickening to repeat it, but we must look at the people behind it who perpetrate it and spread it and the ones who are only too happy to support this type of thing as well.

I don't care who the target is, Deb, or whether it's a minority or mainstream publication, Martini, it's sickening and dangerous. I'm just glad they had to take it down.

At least we still have some public conscience.
