This Is Just Beyond The Pale!

Are We Descending Into Barbarism?

An Australian socialist group has withdrawn newspapers depicting Tony Abbott getting his throat cut by a straight razor.

The grisly Red Flag cover, which was accompanied by the headline "One cut we'd like to see, attracted more than 200 comments – most of them negative – on publisher The Socialist Alternative's Facebook page overnight.

"Oh ... not cool. I'm no fan of the LNP — policies, parties, associates or leader — but this seems unnecessarily violent," one post read.

Another said: "dreadful picture. DO NOT CONDONE violence to anyone. Even Abbott. You LOST me off this page and as a supporter."

The group released a statement this morning defending the Michael Callaghan-inspired cover, but said "legal concerns" meant they would be withdrawing it all the same.

How long before we become like the US and the Middle East where democratically elected leaders are deposed and/or assassinated?

This is not about the previous government.

It suits the left to trot out Ms Gillard to make a comparison, yet when the right do similar they're told not to live in the past, that we've moved on.

It's not that it suits the left. It is simply that this is not new nor is it shocking because the country has seen worse because we became immune to it during Abbotts time in Opposition. During this time, the bar was lowered to apalling standards.

What is different about this is that this image is in a minority newspaper that no-one wil see. The depictions of Gillard were in the mainstream press.

The thing about that, Martini, is that it's reached the mainstream press through it's sheer  bloodyminded rabblerousing graphic.

It was a huge headline on the Yahoo news site with a link to their facebook page.

That was probably the intent. Excellent publicity through outrage.

Based in the OP it sounds like they chose to take it down, which is more than what the attackers of Gillard chose to do.

Re: This Is Just Beyond The Pale!

Talk about banging the drum, nobody cares - so what - some over enthusiastic youth used a silly graphic to portray their disgust in this govt. I seem to remember a michael smith who was recently removed from radio for filthy remarks about Islam, yet some posters like to c&p his rubbish. Then there is the other source of many threads from the op - the CEC who's constant comparing the LNP to nazis....well some might think its an attempt to whip up some violent protests...ooooh the outrage, the danger...oh my......

I don't care who the target is, Deb, or whether it's a minority or mainstream publication, Martini, it's sickening and dangerous. I'm just glad they had to take it down.

At least we still have some public conscience.

i don't like any of it either, never have

omg, seriously it's bizarre that there is so much faux outrage over a picture yet silence on the inhumane treatment of actual human beings, the excited glee over the attacks on our unemployed and disabled - where is the outrage over important things.....where indeed.

I agree, it should never be supported by either side but some people will support any debased rubbish to make their point, its demeaning themselves.

I think you'll find it's genuine outrage, not "faux", as you put it, even by some of their own supporters:

"Oh ... not cool. I'm no fan of the LNP — policies, parties, associates or leader — but this seems unnecessarily violent," one post read.

Why do you think they took it down?

I agree, if this is an adult conversation then I am ashamed at what some on here support. It has no place in a civilised community or conversation.

Harking back to find examples to prop  up the  defence of this type of thing is beyond the pale.

They'll try to defend the indefensible, Lightning...
