Thrifting

 Thoughts?

 Yes? No?

What was your best bargain? Or do you avoid thrifting?

Re: Thrifting

A young friend was picking up a couple of bookcase that were advertised on Gumtree for free. The lady said to him "well I suppose you are going to sell them now " He said no I want them for my new place.

Re: Thrifting

yes way tiny.

and a couple of them are well known oppies  without mentioning names

i don't get why people patronise op shops for clothes when  you can buy new clothes cheaper at other stores

sadly gone are the days  where op shops are for the needy it is more for the greedy now.

Re: Thrifting

Agree 100%

They did get a bit greedy and lost the plot.

Our local Salvos has put prices for clothing back to $2- $3 and cleared out a lot of stuff.

Re: Thrifting

Our local Salvos have colour coded tickets and each week

a different colour is allocated for 1/2 price items.

Also 1st Tuesday of the month is 1/2 price goods for Health Care Card holders

Always lots of bargains

Re: Thrifting

no hope of them doing it here sadly

there would be a lot of people who probably could not afford the 10.00 for a jumper when that 10.00 could mean milk and bread

Re: Thrifting

Op shops like the community op shop up the road from me are really cheap, I got a friend a Harley Davidson vest, it looked brand new for $8, she was so happy, she turned up one day to vac my house for me because I would not take any money.

I think that was a good investment ๐Ÿ™‚

I dont bother with most of the well known ops like the salvos, dirty expensive stuff, the small ops here the ladies even take clothes home wash and iron them.

The church Ops are good as well.

I have two things at the moment one a book I bought from a oppie in Melbourne for $1.50 on the net selling for $800 to $1000 but only if you can sell it, signed first edition.

The other is a Bronze Japanese Plate, very heavy, bought on the Gold Coast for $4, on internet in USA $800.

Tried selling no buyers, just told the kids dont throw them out if my candle snuffs out.

Re: Thrifting

Everything in our charity shop (we only have one - small town!) is 50c or $2, aside from really nice formal dresses which are $5-$10. Once I went into a charity shop in Sydney and I picked up a dress - the tag said $60! So needless to say, I put it down again... ๐Ÿ˜›

Re: Thrifting

I used to go to a local one, and once bought a table..Solid wood, nice scale and v good condition, only $25. The guy working there said that I had been lucky as the 'antique-dealer-guys truck was too full to take it'!!! Apparently the a-d-g would buy pieces of furniture and then put them in his shop and increase the price by 5- 10 times, selling it to people after calling it 'vintage' or 'bo-ho'

I bought the table cause I needed it, it looked good, and I could afford it...
