To buy or not to buy, that is the question.

Computer Anti-virus installations, that is. Do you purchase them, or use a 'freebie' ?

I also use AVG, and adblock plus..........

The only good thing about Norton is their parking lot in Eugene, Oregon, where I park to catch the shutlle for Duck football games.

Yes I too use the AVG one, and have done so for about 6/7 years, and without any problems. *touches wood and hope that isn't tempting providence*

Like Bright.on42, I also use the Super Anti Spyware one.

The reason I ask is because I took my lappy to a repair shop recently for a 'health check' (MOT), and he said that there was a bit of 'grime' on it, and that 'freebies' are not much cop. He maintained that the paid for ones are the best. Oddly enough he went on to say that he has one of his own that he could install for £50 per annum, and of course claimed that it was the best on the market. Mmmmmmmm.......

I declined his kind offer. Both of mine are free, btw.

Your repair shop does sound just a wee bit dodgy, doesn't he? Mind you - if you spoke to 50 'experts' in the field, you'd get 50 different recommendations! As Joe would say - mmmmmmmmmm.

Like you, I've run AVG for at least the last ten years or so, and from memory, have only had one trojan that slipped through - all others were picked up and quarantined.

My son works as a systems administrator for a private school, and even though they insist on purchasing 'top-of-the-line' virus protection, he installs AVG as well - and states unequivocally that it picks up far more than the bought programs!

Now, my future son-in-law also happens to work in the same industry, and AVG is also his program of choice. AVG, updated at every request, plus malwarebytes, seems to be totally effective so far - touch wood!

Re: To buy or not to buy, that is the question.

Never bought anti-virus in my life. It's a gib.  No need the free ones work just as good probably better. I heard a "rumour" a while back that it's comapnies like Nortons that create the viruses..... No I dont have any peer reviewed papers to back this up lol it was only a rumour, but it wouldn't surprise me...

free is better than nothing but if you want

to be fully protected from malware - they are

just not good enough.  paid ones update more

regularay as well.
