For a rumour to be squashed the wording has to be right. Otherwise it can make it worse. Joint statements of denial show a united approach more likely to be taken seriously...depending on what exactly is said and where, it could turn legal, too...there are reasons why one party might want to talk to the other before saying anything publicly. Whether it is true or it isn't.

From their homepage: The Shovel is Australia’s satire news website. That means the stories on this site are made up.
Google : Satire Definition: is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government or society itself, into improvement.
It can be amusing in the right circumstances; but as shown here, people may have been mislead by the 2 contributiions on this thread.

Really Deb, no one who uses even the tiniest bit of thought while reading could possibly think that wasn't a satirical piece. And if they don't understand it wasn't meant to be taken seriously they really have no place trying to discuss current affairs or the news.

It is this sort of thing that becomes headlines by other publications, and along with distortion of facts is deceptive.
Some people fully believe that it is true journalism and it must be true because such-and-such from the ABC or Murdoch said it.
And just perhaps, some of these misguided and misled readers are not only discussing the subject on fora or coffee groups, family gatherings, but eventually are swayed in their decision to vote for a such-and-such a Party, or not.
Simple Duplicity, in my opinion.
Just as the word "perception" appears to have been lost in the promotion of someone's book about to go on sale.
