Realistically if you are a tradesperson or someone offering a service (like martini(), you can't expect every quote you give to be accepted. People as for more than 1 quote for a job, they will only accept one...time giving quotes won't always be recouped.

so if you don't give quotes how do you get work?

the time taken to give quote is built into every other job you might do.

not only do i ask for quotes but expect to see pictures and ask for numbers of previous clients.

for all i know you may be the worst tradesman in the world and i'm going to check before i let you work on my house.

On the other end of the stick (for example, plumbers) they charge a $100 call out fee.. even though it may only take them less than 5mins to fix what the problem is or find there is no plumbing problem. Works both ways...

I had gutters replaced on my previous house & a measure and quote virtually took em no time at all.

Didnt like the first quote but i took his measurements and rung around, told them what style of gutters i want , color (was dark blue to match the blue tiles btw, looked very nice) and what tiles were on so they knew what to work with.

I ended up giving the job to a private tradie way cheaper then the large companies, did a great job too.
