Victoria to ease restrictions

Victorians will be allowed to have up to 20 people in their homes and stay overnight at private residences and tourist accommodation from June 1, under an easing of coronavirus restrictions.

Camping will also be allowed at state and national parks, but communal facilities like kitchens and bathrooms will remain closed.

Victorians will be able to celebrate weddings with up to 20 people in addition to the celebrant and couple, and up to 50 people at funerals.

Up to 20 people will be allowed at other religious ceremonies, in addition to those required to perform the service.

"It's not so much about 'stay home', but it is absolutely about 'stay safe'," Premier Daniel Andrews said.

In an early concession ahead of the June changes, Victorians will be able to use outdoor playgrounds, skateparks and outdoor gym equipment from Tuesday — the same day some children return to state schools.

But those who can work from home will be urged to continue to do so, to prevent the amount of contact that occurs when colleagues share bathrooms, kitchens and office spaces.

Mr Andrews said that, along with the cumulative impact of the "cautious easing" of restrictions, would be reassessed in June.

Along with the rest of the world regardless of the individual national cirumstances - is there some sort of international co-ordination happening here ?

How the hell did you arrive at that?

Can't you just read a news report without the tin foil hat?

I wouldn't think so, since when have countries all around the world cooperated and coordinated over anything? Practically never

But there are a couple of things happening here.

First off, there is the learning from others/getting ideas from other syndrome. You'll remember when Italy went into lockdown. How our shops suddenly had a massive run on them. Why did that happen? I'd hazard a guess it was people saying to themselves, hey, this virus thing is taking hold and if Italy can go into lockdown, that could happen here too, so we better be ready. If we go into quarantine we'll need.. toilet paper!! And flour.. and pasta etc

That's what humans do-we learn by example.

So leaders all around the world are watching each other to see how others are handling things. After all, most of them have never had a pandemic quite like this to deal with.

You can bet your bottom dollar a few countries will also be watching us to see how we get through a winter season.

Some other countries are starting to open up a bit. I know that is happening in Canada and I think also in USA. And some European countries too.

The other thing is the economic situation. It has had a big impact on most countries and at some stage all of them have to consider the consequences of staying shut/versus the risk of opening and getting on with business. Most places have had a virtual shut down for 2 months so most places are getting to the end of their ability to absorb much more ecomonic pain, I would say.

So it is not co-ordinated internationally, I would say it is just we have been travelling in tandem to some extent. NZ has actually been slow off the mark, I think they only have 31 active cases today yet they are just coming off some of their restrictions, I think?

add Brazil ... which made me start to wonder considering their near genocidal death rate  ( also the slow introduction of mitigation despite at the start all watching China,  like deers at night on a highway wondering what the bright lights are all about )

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-brazil-cases-idUSKCN21V1X1

The outbreak has stoked tension in the Brazilian government, with right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro downplaying risks of the virus and urging the country to return to normal, while his health minister, state governors and local officials urge stricter measures."

sound familiar ?

Re: Victoria to ease restrictions

I don't think anyone in politics has quite known how to tackle the situation because it is something new.

We're all looking at things in hindsight, which is an exact science.

Even the medical experts don't all agree on the right approach to take.

Just from my perspective, I think having a lockdown and having it early was worthwhile. I know we are going to get more cases now things are opening up (I would prefer our borders to stay shut to international travellers till at least the end of the year) but at least we have had a breathing space so hopefully medical services won't be overwhelmed. I am getting older and I have a vested interest in hospitals having ventilators and such available to all those who need it, not just the young, Smiley Happy
