A controversial Muslim community leader has said violence towards women should be a "last resort".
President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils Keysar Trad appeared on Sky News last night when host Andrew Bolt brought up domestic violence.
The presenter quoted from the Koran, saying "It is permissible for him (husbands) to beat her (the wife) light with his hands".
"Violence is a last resort," Trad responded.
"Before you even consider using your hand before you consider any act of violence have you checked box number one, which is counselling. Have you checked box number two?
[...]
Given the priapic identity of the alleged religion in question is it any wonder we see such views trotted out from time to time.
I'll bet we'll see an avalanche of criticism directed at Mr Trad after what he had to say. At the same time we'll see a flight of pigs soaring high.

except
little girls will still be mutillated
husbands will still be taught it's okay to beat wives
women in some of these countries will still not be allowed to drive
etc, etc, etc..........

To be honest ele, I have no idea what the Muslim Imams and other authorised clerics have to say about the teachings of the Koran.
Whenever anything controversial comes up they are all mute....they don't speak English and will not make a public statement. This was becoming obvious many years ago and that was when Keysar Trad stepped forward although he had no authority whatsoever to speak for anyone but himself.
For a long time I have thought that the biggest setback to Muslim/Christian relations are the Imams and Clerics. They just go to ground when there is a terrorist scare or if they do make a comment it is usually to add fuel to the fire.
We know several Muslims who are horrified by the lack of leadership shown by their own preachers.

It's not a question of interpretation at all; the Koran does not prescribe both forsaking the wife in bed and beating her in equal measure if she has the courage and the temerity to disobey her husband.
The beating is prescribed in the Koran as a last resort if all other meaures to ensure the wife's obedience fail.
This is very important and I think that you and maybe some others have failed to appreciate this point.
The point is that the obedience of the wife to the husband in Islam is a requirement and that physical violence by the husband against the wife is permitted and even encouraged as a last resort to achieve the aim of the whole excercise; the wife's obedience.
And as to why there seems to be a deafening silence of critical voices coming from the feminists and the leftist side of politics, I can only surmise a lack of comprehension on their part and an unwillingness to comment on something which they do not completely understand.
Surah 4:34 . . . But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand."

And no outrage from you that in the Koran is given the explicit right of men to "discipline" their wives ?
This whole acceptance of the right of men to "discipline" their wives and we're just haggling over the ways and means of how it's done, is absolutely horrifying.

*Kill Women Who Are Not Virgins On Their Wedding Night*
"But if this charge is true "(that she wasn't a virgin on her wedding night)", and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her father’s house and there her townsmen shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father's house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst" (Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 22:20-21 NAB)
Good ol religion.
