Political threads have their place in social media but I do not think 'Community Spirit' is the place.
The vitriol and nastiness some of these threads engender, leading to claims of interpersonal posts, removal of posts and frequent locking of threads all damage any Community Spirit which previously existed.
Freedom of speech is to be applauded but the current rash of political threads is 'infecting' the spirit of the Community Spirit board.
Does anyone agree with me?
Would anyone else be prepared to communicate with the moderators requesting consideration of this suggestion?
I have.

Why should we shut down political discussion?
Anyone can post about anything.

When all else fails, point & laugh hysterically about a typo.
I doubt it. I counted ten political threads - all started by the same poster - on the front page here only a couple of days ago; and they all had at least a few responses.
I think our dedicated political posters have enough passion to keep any amount of threads going anywhere if they want to - or are you suggesting they are only starting them on CS as 'look at me' attention grabbers?

I slightly agree with Laney. It's just the spam threads that spoil it for serious political discussions. Isn't there a board policy against spam?

Why would giving political discussion its own dedicated board be shutting it down?

Exposure to whom - all those who dislike the threads and feel irritated by them?

That IS the answer.
Yeah, that works out so well for those who do.
Including snide and covert insulting pot shots

disapproval doesn't seem to bother some, better negative attention than none. especially if on a mission

Because most people wouldn't find it. Most people wouldn't look for it.
The number of political threads exploded while Gillard was PM and after a short repreive has continued along the same path as then. I do think it would be preferable if posters used the thread they started last week rather than starting new threads about the same topic over and over but there is no rule against it so any suggestion that they use the existing thread does not go down well.
