WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education ๐Ÿคฃ

Re: WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I agree with you, it is totally illogical to say something is a valid guess, then say there was only one possible solution and you didn't get it.

If it was a valid guess, then that means there was more than one solution.

When you think of some of the answers and almost slang words we encounter in these games, I don't think we can assume anything is off the board as a possibility.๐Ÿคฃ

I have actually noticed with Bot that some of his suggested second words, the ones he tells me are a lot better than what I went with, often have a smaller range of letters aand give less info than the word I have used.

I suspect that what Bot is telling us here is that plurals are unlikely to be the wordle answers. That may be so, but that doesn't mean they are not valid or very useful as eliminators.

In your example, I would have assumed the S was more likely to be in the 5th postion than in 2nd spot.

My 3rd word in this was redig. Which I hated, by the way. I didn't even know if the system would allow it as a word but I only had i & e as letters and I needed to try them in different spots, with different consonants, if possible. Other words I thought of eg fried, I could see wouldn't give any vowel help.

Now, not only did Bot love this redig word, he thought it was a terrific choice and  one of his top picks.๐Ÿ˜‚

You just never know what Bot will like or disapprove of.

Oh, the walk of shame.๐Ÿ˜‚

I just didn't get anywhere fast with this today. Not that it is hard.

But I chose the wrong words to go with in a few spots.

They were logical and possible guesses, just not the answers.

springyzone, this was a horrible Octordle. I hated it. Nothing felt comfortable and there was very little cohesion.

I can perfectly understand your result, and I consider it Octordleโ€™s own day of shame.

Without even bothering to use a spoiler, let me give the only reason why my result didnโ€™t fall down further; I entered MANIA instead of MANIC, and it was a last-minute change of mind. Iโ€™d got to the I and was just about to type C, when my finger almost of its own accord typed another A.

I also lost another turn in using Y rather than I for another wordโ€ฆ I thoroughly dislike the bottom left wordโ€ฆ and my final comment is Pfffft!

Re: WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

This is off topic, not even wordle.

I have been playing WWF with a sort of friend (a very distant relative, we share an ancestor).

I have had a hard selection of letters. Last 5 turns, no vowels. And very limited vowel spots on the board I could take advantage of. But anyway, I got a blank tile.๐Ÿ˜ Woohoo, I thought.

The system bar was telling me that at best, I could score maybe about 20-25. I tried just about every spot and combination I could think of, to no avail. Best i could do was a 17 point score.

So after that, I got the system to show me the highest possible scoring word. It was obv.

Really? Obv is a word?

That's how I feel on a regular basis in WWF. ๐Ÿ˜‚

When I first started playing, I felt quite inadequate but these days I just figure a lot of other people would not recognise some of their words either.

My opponent Jan recently played 'ee', for example. I am proud to say I knew that was an accepted word, from previous experience.

Other unusual ones that are acceptable are ai, ae, ba, bo, es, fa, oe.

And I am pleased to say my last move scored 102 with QIS.๐Ÿ˜

Wordle today was okay.

As you can see, I diverged from my usual for turn 2. Bot wasn't that keen on it but I thought it turned out pretty well actually.

Usual starter of TRACE, and LOUGH as my 2nd row eliminatorโ€ฆ and I used the illogical valid-but-not-valid plurals information when solving the final word in 2R. (I excluded VETOS from consideration.)
