WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

I could solve 4L directly after playing my starter, but then needed an eliminator to move further. LOUGH was helpful.

With 3L, I knew it was going to be either RIGOR or VIGOR (ugh, US spelling), and tried VIGOR because 4R was either GROPE or GROVE and I needed to rule in or rule out that “v”.

The rest of the board was already obvious.

This one was easily solved - but this was of course based upon the starter and the first eliminator used. springyzone, I suspect you were plunged into “unhelpful” territory as you set out, and you had to fight to get enough information to start the solving. I’ve been there.

Hmm. I see you solved 4R before solving 3L, so I presume that somewhere along the way you’d already played the

and knew it couldn’t be the 4th letter…?

Honestly, I would have been better just sticking to my usual 2 eliminators.

Yes - your guess was a good possibility but it didn’t rule out much! You did get it though.

Re: WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

After a wearisome night, during which my mind ran ceaselessly along broken trajectories and my body longed for deeper sleep, it’s time to Wordle.

Wordle 1,074 3/6

My starter could not have been less encouraging. With the absence of any uncovered letters, what were the most likely remaining letters? There was so much I could have chosen, and I’d almost certainly need 4 rows to solve it.

However, my eliminator was extremely helpful. I was able to rule out other contenders and solve it in 3.

Top left (1L) didn’t quite have enough to solve with certainty, but I could make a guess.

But then I had to use an eliminator. I was already thinking about 2L, although I’d leave that until later… but it’s never too early to try eliminating when the shape of a word offers too many possibilities. My eliminator let me guess 3L, and 4L also gave itself up.

3R was going to be one of two possibilities. I don’t know why I chose the less obvious, except that I was also thinking of trying to rule out a final letter for 4R. I was lucky; I was able to solve 2R as well, and in retrospect I should have played 2L first, then 3L followed by 4L. Ah well… as I said, luck.

I HATE the word in top right (1R)! It’s a diminutive anyway. Ugh.

Finally we come to 2L. I still didn’t know the first letter; it came down to two possibilities for the first letter, but that was better than the previous odds.

I was lucky to get it in 3 today. I went for it at turn 2, and although it solved the shape of the word, there were still a few other things it could have been. I only went for this as I think it may have been out on one of the other word games in the last month or so, not sure.

I was half inclined to go for dingo but that was the answer a few weeks back? Not sure. If so, then it wouldn't be making an appearance again. I also fancied minor.

This went extremely smoothly, I never put a foot wrong as such. The thing is though, the first 3 words were eliminators & solving after turn 3 has a big impact on the score.

I thought # 2 was a bit of an odd word choice but it was all I could think of that would fit by the end.

Yes… odd word. I didn’t expect it and didn’t like it.

You’re right, springyzone, with the use of three eliminators pushing up that score. Octordle definitely rewards the lucky starter and 2nd row eliminator.

This Wordle really needs the user to get hold of a P as soon as possible. If I hadn’t used an eliminator with P in the 2nd row, I have no doubt this would have been a 4 or even 5 row exercise.
