WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

I started with TRACE and played GUILD as my 2nd row eliminator.

I had a bit of help from a memory of Octordle, I think, a few days back. It inspired my second guess, which wasn't correct but gave some greens.

You know, I was doing fairly well in this, but towards the end, there were 3 possibilities for both #3 & 7.

So I tried an eliminator to cut down on some of the choices. It solved #3 but I was still left with 2 possibilities for #7 and chose the wrong one.😐

Oye! Oye! I have a 9-row solution for today’s Octordle!

I started with CATER, and managed without any eliminator!

I did think my triumphant march would be halted at 1R, given that I still had only two yellows, but I spent considerable time on that word, finally seeing only two possibilities. One seemed exactly the sort of sneaky word that Octordle was likely to use.

1R could have been UPBYE or QUEUE. Given that UPBYE is the British English spelling, and given also that QUEUE has two letters that are used twice (the sort of thing so beloved by Octordle), I went for QUEUE.

Yes, with #2, I looked at it and thought-hmm, lots of other letters have been out to no avail and we are still stuck on 2 vowels, then I 'saw' it & you're right-I thought-just the sort of thing Octordle is likely to do, and so it proved.😁

My starter didn’t begrudge me its information. A perfectly decent two greens… based on which I had some suspicion about the shape of the word.

But the bot complained that my eliminator didn’t reduce the number of guesses as much as another word would have.

Yet my eliminator led me to the answer in one less turn than the bot’s way would have done.

No, Mr Bot, it’s not just luck. Instinct, experience, the human touch!
