WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wordle

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education ๐Ÿคฃ

I thought of you today as I did mine. I realised if you used trace to start, it would give you a hint of the shape. You did well with your eliminator, I have trouble of thinking of some of them.

Spoiler
alien/shout. I was initially going to maybe try a different eliminator but then I thought.. it could be stalk, shall, stall or something with either S or T in it
Third, pricy, which gave it away.

I don't think there are any fresh words here, we have seen them all before.

I took a risk on #2 at the end.

Spoiler
brown or grown. It was also obvious by the end that #6 was going to be bring or wring, but luckily for me, I decided to try brown.

Hmm. 1L was a 1 in 3 chance. Sheer luck.

More luck helped me in guessing 3L correctly; it could have cost me in points by jumping onto it early.

I was also lucky with 2L, as it had two possible answers.

TRACE
GHOUL <- eliminator
THETA ๐ŸŽฏ
CRรˆME ๐ŸŽฏ could have been CREPE
AFOOT ๐ŸŽฏ could have been STOAT, ADOPT
FLACK ๐ŸŽฏ
SHADY ๐ŸŽฏ
STATE ๐ŸŽฏ could have been SPATE
BROWN ๐ŸŽฏ
WRING ๐ŸŽฏ

Traps abounded: I just had to take a punt on row 5 as there was no clear-cut answer after crรจme. Looking at 1L, stoat/adopt/afoot were all logical options. It was largely luck that caused me to guess AFOOT (but it did occur to me that knowing the status of either S or F would help with 3L).

And that opened up the board. If Iโ€™d tried to guess 3L (flack) before solving 1L (afoot), Iโ€™d have been faced with black/slack/flack. If Iโ€™d tried 4R (shady) before solving 4L (flack), Iโ€™d have had the shady/shaky dilemma.

By now I knew that 1R was going to be BROWN; I should actually have played it at this point, as I wasnโ€™t 100% sure about 3L (state/spate). I could then have solved 3R (as Iโ€™d no longer have the bring/wring dilemma once Iโ€™d played 1R) and have left 3L until last. Ah well - it worked out anyway.

Spoiler
Because my first turn (alien) showed there was no e but there was an N, I assumed the ending would probably be something like G or Y or K or D

So for my second turn, I used fudgy, which is one of my eliminators I sometimes call into play. It paid off better than I expected!

This got off to a very uninspiring start. Even after my second turn (shout) it took me a while to guess #5, and by turn 6, I made a mistake.

Spoiler
I had #7 down early on as either drove or grove and #3 as likely boost or roost.
Once I had solved #7, I saw the R exposed in #3 and thought, aha, it is roost. Wrong.๐Ÿ˜‘
I saw the error of my ways immediately and solved it next turn. But what hurt is I should have seen roost was not possible, I had just rushed in based on earlier thoughts, without double checking (again. A constant failure of mine).

I thought #8 was a bit of a weird one to have but couldn't see what else it could be.
And last one solved (#2) was pure luck as it was between scrub or scrum so I just had to pick one.

Anyway, here we are - and DINGY was the only answer I could see.

I didn't really expect to see an O, but you'd think with 4 letters exposed, I'd be pretty right, wouldn't you!

All I could see was octal so I played it next. Oh well, 4 isn't too bad, for me.๐Ÿ˜

I was actually shocked to do as well as I did with this. I did take a risk with solving #1 as it could have been vaunt .

Lower down, I made a mistake on #4. I was agonising over dread or bread and in the end played bread as I figured at least it exposed another letter. Only to find both my ideas were wrong and it was break. Hadn't even thought of that!๐Ÿคฃ

On the whole though, I was able to guess several of these because I am sure they have been out on other versions of octordle lately. owner, twixt, totem?

Wrong guess for 2L (your #3, I think)โ€ฆ and even with my final word (2R / #4), I had to make a 50/50 guess. I didnโ€™t like this Octordle. Pfffft.

TOTEM ๐ŸŽฏ could have been toyed, totedโ€ฆ but totem is such an Octordle word
BOWER ๐Ÿ’ฃ
WOOER ๐ŸŽฏ
BREAK ๐ŸŽฏ could have been bread

Before I played โ€œbowerโ€, 2L could have been vower, dower, bower, wooer, rower.

And at that point, 2R could have been bream, break, dream, freak, dread.

I had to make a guess, no matter which panel I chose. It could have been worse; if 2L had been in the _OWER pattern, Iโ€™d still have had to take potshots at the possibilities.

Looking back, POUND or BOUND might have been a better eliminator, but each word comes with its own blessings and curses, of courseโ€ฆ One of the reasons I used LINGS was that I wanted to eliminate either S or P for 1R (crest/crept) and also wanted to get those useful L/N/G letters ruled in or out. Ah well.
