I recently stumbled across WORDLE online. For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.
https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/
This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:
Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though). Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words. I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts. Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

It’s a sobering thought that using a purely statistical-lexicological approach just won’t provide the fastest or best path to solving Wordle-type puzzles. Sometimes one just needs to jump over the edge of the word cliff.
NB: After I’d solved “baste” with luck, I’d almost decided to use an eliminator that would help with 3L. The word … oxlip. It would have been an excellent eliminator!

I couldn't really complain about the eliminators as they gave up 4 of the letters, although it would have been nice to get a green somewhere.

There was not one single spot where I felt I could confidently solve on turn 3.
It was extremely annoying actually, because I had 4 letters exposed in some of them.
#4 was especially annoying as didn't we just face that same collection of choices a day or so ago??
If I had had to go wild and guess, I would have gone for ethic in #6
But I decided to play it safe and went for pricy on turn 3, which is just as well.
I only got #4 because I seem to recall waste came out last time? Could be wrong. But thought I'd ring the changes.
Then made a mistake on my second last turn.😫

Once I’d solved 1R with wheat, the plains looked decidedly empty. Panic could have set in; nothing looked promising, but then I set my sights upon 4R. I had only a yellow A and a final O - but I realised that was enough, given that most of the letters that would fit that scenario had already been ruled out. I was looking for a word that was almost certainly of the _ A _ _ O pattern, without the letters CEGHILNRSTW. Only two words fit that brief (apart from the slangy informal stuff), and mambo is a notoriously overused Octordle word.
Mambo then led to madam in 3R: easy pickings right through to the end.

SpoilerSpoilerI took a risk on tirn 3, shore or shove. I went for shore as R is more useful & it seemed like the word might be more likely, though always hard to tell.
After my first 2 turns, I had written down some possibilities but as I worked through some of the early answers, I was pleased to find the way became clearer each step.
