What would the cs'ers do?
Say somebody loaned you an item and then that somebody was just incredibly nasty to you one day totally out of the blue (unrelated to the lending) and you had a huge falling out and didn't speak for a long long time. Could that somebody contact you out of the blue and ask for the item back?
Would you give it back?
The falling out was that vile there is no chance of words ever being exchanged ever again. Ever.
Would you think "stiff biscuits you should have remembered I had your item before you were nasty"?

If I had a falling out with a person I would immediately returned anything of theirs I had. Actually I would drive it over as soon as practical.

Yes it's obvious you both forgot about the item.

if you have it and know exactly where it, I'd give it back. If I had no idea what has happened to it, I would just sorry, I have no idea where it is, and if I ever come across it I will post it to you.

Has the lender asked for the item back?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
If someone asserts that theyโre never wrong, itโs time to worry about their sanity, not their intellect.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Interesting statement that.
Jesus was never wrong. He claimed himself to be God. There was and still questions about his sanity. There're still plenty of people out there claiming to be Jesus.

Fair enough i you don't want to communicate with them but keeping what was theirs is just spiteful and you won't gain anything by doing it, why don't you give the mutual friend the item to give back to them .

I would just send it to them.
If they are remembering something that was loaned to you years ago, they evidently want it back.
No dramas, you win cause they are out of your life, and their stuff is no longer cluttering up your life. They cant control you if you release them.
