This is the second poem Erica.
If you like I will have a go at the 1st one tomorrow.
A man has fall’n, as I’ve heard say
At Fullethy mill, not far away;
It caused his death I understand,
I hope he’s now at God’s right hand –
This man had clim’d the sails that night
Tho cloth was wrong, he tried to right;
The wind blew strong, the night was cold,
By means unknown he lost his hold.
His friends in search with sorrow found
Poor Johnson lying on the ground,
He fell so fatal, beyond restore;
On earth, poor man, he’s seen no more.
The wind doth blow where God doth list,
The stroke of death none can resist;
A sudden death is God’s intent
That men on earth should all repent.
His absence caused his friends some grief,
His soul was safe- that brings relief;
It’s God appoints the death of all,
A sparrow cannot unnoticed fall.
Our friend is gone, but we remain,
Let us prepare to meet again;
Our time is short on earth to stay,
But soon like him must pass away.
Seek ye the Lord, prepare to die,
For life is short, and death is nigh;
Repeat, believe, and be forgiven,
And God will take your soul to heaven.

The first poem is as apt today as it seems those many years ago! Deb.

Thank you so very much, j*oono.
I have it copied and saved, just hope Flashie does not mind.
How wonderful to see the style of poetry from 100 years ago.

You're welcome Erica,
Here is the 1st one for you. Times haven't changed that much have they Lloydslights, although I'm not sure I agree with the use of the rod
This is the 1st poem and it’s called Rule or Ruin
One thing on earth. I’m greiv’d to see,
That Parents should so foolish be,
And will not make the child obey,
But let it have its will and way.
I wish that Mothers were more wise,
And teach their infants as they rise;
Early they will I know begin
With disobedience, the first sin.
School and teachers may do their best,
But much I say with parents rest;
For if there be no rules at home,
The Child in sin is sure to roam.
Now if you fear the road to take,
Their stubborn will to bend or break,
The law will teach in after years,
Will cause them pain, and you some tears.
I think that Parents are to blame,
Their evil passions not to tame,
If I had children I would try
And use the rod, and teach them why.
Do pray to God for grace I say,
To teach your Child in the right way;
For Solomon as a truth foretold,
That they shall not depart when old.
I could not live as some men do;
I love being quiet, now what say you?
My home with joy I must confess,
Is blest with peace and happiness.
I do believe that a good wife,
Is a great blessing in this life;
Husband and wife should both unite,
To order home and children right.

WOW! Iam glad I did not live 200 years ago. I was brought up strict enough, although I never received the rod, my darling brother surely did.
It's true this poem is right for todays parents who let their children run riot, no matter where they are.
Thanks again j*oono.

I now only have 2 jewelry items of my mother's - she didn't have much to begin with as we were definitely NOT well off - the rest was stolen when my house was broken into a few years ago.
But if I got to keep one item, I am so glad it was this one. It is the traditional style from her home country, she smuggled it across the border when she was fleeing communist occupation.
The memories it brings me are my greatest treasure.

My parents watches.
I had Mums watch since I was 10. I wore it all through school. It still keeps perfect time.
I've had Dads watch for about 3 years. It got smashed about 15 months ago in a car accident. I didn't notice straight away. I was in the hospital feeling sore and sorry but coping ok, when I looked at the watch and saw it was smashed I bawled. A lovely CW poster got it fixed for me 🙂

My mum had a recipe book with lovley handwritten recipes in it. She would gather recipes from the from and rellies and write them in the book and put alongside the name of the person who gave her the recipe. My sister has that old book. She made one for me and photographed the pages from mums old book and printed them and pasted them in my recipe book. Plus she added some new family recipes. My niece also found some squirrel recipes and put in it. Cheeky brat.
