I wonder, is it different if your dad is a policeman?
Ms Bishop has done a good job here. I wonder why the parents of other drug traffickers, who said it wasn't their drugs, didn't get the same help?

I expect that Bishop will rush to stop this ultimate punishment.
Bali Nine inmates Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran are due to be put to death within weeks.

The other Australians in foreign prisons may also have been innocent. We will never know.
But the AFP know.

Yesterday's Daily Telegraph revealed a candelstine diplomatic rescue operation led by foreign Minister Julie Bishop has spared the life of Sydney women Kalynda Davis.
She was covertly flown back to Sydney early yesterday. The month long operation was so secretive that senior Government officials were only told "on a need to know basis" Miss Bishop oversaw the negotiations between Chinese authorities and Department of Foreign Affairs staff at the Australian Consulate-General, she kept the deal under wraps to avoid any publicity that could have torpedoed the negotiations.

The limited media coverage and story is very similar to that of the "Antz Pantz" model who was arrested/rescued/released years ago from Bali.
Michelle Leslie.
I imagine there would be a "scale of assistance" offered by DFAT and/or legal representatives dependent upon funds available.
For her to be released now, appears to indicate that Kalynda was innocent and funds were available to realize that sooner than later.
DEB
Leslie admitted her guilt (one pill), pretended to adopt Islam, and enough $ changed hands.
Perhaps something similar happened with this last event.

The guy she was with? NZ born.. travelling on NZ passport? (he is a dual citizen) NZ providing Consular assistance.
A spokesman for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said this evening that Gardiner remained in custody in China and had legal representation.
"Consular assistance is being provided to Peter Gardiner by the New Zealand Consulate-General in Guangzhou," the spokesman said.
"The Consul-General has visited Mr Gardiner in the detention centre to provide consular advice and check on his well-being."
az - Her behaviour is suspect.
Yes, it was. I would like to know what caused her to go into hiding (for want of a better word) when her parents reported her missing to the police. The media keep publishing that she had attended Christian schools etc.. as if you can't turn out bad because of that.
icy... I am sure there is no age limit for the Tinder dating app, but it is mainly used by young people...hopefully ones that aren't already in a relationship.
No, Peter Greste.

No, Peter Greste.
In Egypt, not China. What worked in China this time (what ever that was) won't necessarily work with other countries Govt's.
ps - I mean who goes to any country for an intended 3 day visit?
Business people, pollies. Not many tourists would fly from Aust to China for 3 days.. that sets off alarm bells ''drug runner' in immigration.
When you enter overseas countries they ask how long you are staying in that country, why you are there- business, visit family, tourist. What plans do you have?
I suppose if you had a wedding to attend overseas and couldn't take much time off work, you could go for a few days. That could be backed up though if it was true.

i stated same a few posts back actually:
....no mention of the intended 3 day trip to China.......very suss in imo.

Obviously a bribe was paid for her release.
This is the unofficial accepted form of negotiation over there. Fact.

We have trade agreements with Egypt............... and we give aid, some huge amount, I am sure.

Foreign aid worth $37.5 million has flowed to Egypt from Australia since 2008.

That still doesn't influence letting australians off charges and/or out of jail, and it shouldn't either.
The foreign aid is given, there are no conditions with it that say they must not charge or put in jail any Australians the are in Egypt. Or that Australian Govt can interefere with their countries laws and application of them.
Australia gives a lot of $$ in foreign aid to Indonesia, does the Indonesia Govt let Australians out of jail because Australia requests them to.. No.
