I went straight into search Iron Knob..
I now recall there was info and a picture of Iron Knob on the back of my school atlas - steel industry South Aust.

That part of Canberra, Fyshwick, has streets named for industrial/mining towns e.g., Newcastle, Gladstone, Whyalla, Isa, Beaconsfield, Kembla, Pirie.
I'm pretty sure it's the same for all Canberra surburbs. They have a theme. I used to live where there was a WA theme, Freemantle, Bunbry, Whittenoom(sp?), etc.
But, back to the OP, someone really wasn't thinking when they decided to use COC on Iron Knob

You could be right. Canberra thrives on acronyms. I was working for the PS at one time when our department had a name change which could have resulted in an unfortunate acronym. We were told in no uncertain terms, by the departmental secretary no less, that that was NOT how the department was to be referred to

I didn't think when I named a child with wonderful christian names about the acronym when joined with the surname initial.
