What Would You Do ?

Yesterday I was walking through the LIbrary

and right in front of me was $10 on the floor

it was right out in the middle of the room , no one was standing next to it

so I pick it up and put it in my pocket and walked out as I was about to do .

Some years ago I worked as a checkout operator at one of the Big 2 supermarts

one day an old man came through my checkout and paid with $100 note

I could see a smalll dog ear in the corner but noticed that the note was still complete

thus meaning that two $100 notes were perfectly stuck together

I acessed the situation quickly in my head because I had never struck this before

1- just put it in the register it belongs to C*l*S

2-put it in my pocket no one is ever going to know and the register will balance

3-give it to the old man even though he had no clue and would have recieved the notes joined

anyway I had a quick look  to see that the supervisor was not around pulled the two notes apart

and gave the second one back to the old guy

he was so happy that I thought I had done the right thing but never told any of  my co-workers about it

what do you think you would do ?

Re: What Would You Do ?

Some 20 years back we went to cinema, we sat right in the middle of the row, and when the film ended we sat a while to let the other people leave.  As we were making our way out then there was  wallet with about $200 cash and student card, driver's license etc.  We took it to the cashier and handed it over, telling her there contacts for the owner inside.  As she opened it and saw the $, her eyes just lit up.  I always regretted for not keeping it, and contacting the girl myself, or at least not taking her contact details and make sure she knows we handed it with all that cash, so if she did not get it back questions should have been asked.  It was a lot of money for UNI student.

By the way keeping winning lottery ticket that is not yours is a criminal offence.  I am sure there was a case of a couple who found a ticket, cashed it and later were arrested and charged with "theft by finding".

why ???

because I expect that the supermarket would claim that money to be theirs under the circumstances

and If they saw me doing that I would have been in trouble

But you had the customer right in front of you. You knew who the money belonged to.

That you even considered stealing off the customers says a lot.

Re: What Would You Do ?

Both scenarios are a no brainer.

Even without identifying the $10, it should be handed in.

The only time I have kept money is where I have found it on the street and there has been no-one around to hand it to. But I am only talking small amounts.

Years ago when I was a kid I found a roll of notes with an elastic around them. There was $200 which was a lot of money at the time. My parents handed it in to our local police station but no one claimed it during a specified time and I got it back! I wonder if they stil do this with lost stuff?

Re: What Would You Do ?

I was at work one night, and I came across 150 under a row of trolleys. I handed it in to the supervisor on duty, who put it in the safe of the office. Three months later no one had come to claim it so it was given back to me.

As far as I know they do.  I'm fairly sure they contact the finder and ask what they want done with it.

Re: What Would You Do ?

The life center has a free trial this week. I went there 3 times for a sauna and shower. I left my swimsuit, and asked at the front counter if they found it, or had a lost n found. A lady asked me to describe it, i did, and she said "yes, we have that" she went to get it, cameback and told me it was missing, must have been thrown out after a day or so. I told her not to worry about it, but i got the feeling that she felt horrable about it, because she went around looking frantically for it.

Re: What Would You Do ?

It was very clear that the man handed over two hundred dollars, why wouldn't you give it back to him
?

Re: What Would You Do ?

The Op didn't consider stealing it, saying they checked the supervisor wouldn't see in case the supermarket thought staff were giving wrong, too much change.
