What a way to motivate, not

HE CERTAINLY doesn’t beat around the bush.

The head of the Australian Medical Association Queensland (AMAQ) has slammed residents of the Sunshine State, saying they’re too fat and drink too much, as the group lobbies for health reforms ahead of the state election later this month.

Dr Rudd also said unhealthy meals at school tuckshops should also be scrapped to prevent the next generation developing poor diet habits.

“The school tuckshops are supposed to be healthy places, but the reality is, they (aren’t).”

“We’ve all seen tuckshop ladies and there’s a reason why they’ve got tuckshop arms.”

Apart from being too fat, Queenslanders also drank too much, Dr Rudd said.

He has since apologised for the "tuckshop arms" remark.

Just my HO.

Yeah we can't actually SAY that because some people might be offended.

People should not get offended when uncomfortable truth is said because something needs to be done.  Overweight people often complain that they are discriminated against and judged etc.  The fact is that overweight people put lots of stress on our medical services.  Something has to be done for their sake and for the sake of their children, who have increased chance to be also obese.

There is a big difference between being nasty and insulting just for sake of it, which is unacceptable, and constructive criticism.

There is and although the message he was attempting to get across might be valid his delivery was woeful.  The bit about canteen lady arms was nasty and insulting to all those women who have freely given their time to serve other people's children.  Following his logic he should also tell the fat truckdrivers to get out and push their trucks for excercise.

Perhaps we could eliminate dumb nasty politicians by standing them in front of knife thrower trainees to determine their worth.  Those who bleed are judged unfit for duty.

Glee

It's OK for you to call them "dumb nasty politicians" and " fat truckdrivers" but NOT for the Doctor to call

"women with Tuckshop arms "?????

No wonder people are confused.

You are soooo hypocritical it is not funny.

Re: What a way to motivate, not

Much overeating has an emotional cause, and discrimination, blame, humiliation, judgement, nastiness etc. will lead to more overeating, not less.

It is often the case that until the emotional cause is addressed, the overeating will not stop.

Hard to see why some people cannot understand this.

OK, he could have left that bit out, but I think the point is that school should not be offering kids unhealthy food.  Schools should not be peddling soft drinks.  My friends who are doctors are are in despair about seeing so many overweight people coming with obesity induced problems, and unwillingness to do something about it.  They see these people on the street stuffing their faces with junk, and giving the same food to their kids, and then coming to the surgery and saying that they eat almost nothing, and are asking for stomach staples.

We are being told that Medicare is not sustainable, well, obesity is one of the reasons why the costs are blowing out.

Sometimes it takes a hard line to wake ppl up to their destructive behaviour, if the softly softly approach hasn't had the desired effect.

Where are all these schools that are selling junk food though. In the past 20 years I've not seen a school that offers unhealthy food in the canteen as there has been a huge educational campaign about exactly that.  About the most unhealthy food would be icy poles/ice blocks, which are not going to cause obesity.   It's not the school canteens that care casuing obesity.
