I think it is great that they put less materials into shelving units. Some of the bookcases Ive seen have no backboard. They have a criss cross of wood strips.
Metals shelves with criss cross metal like you see on shoe racks. You can get metal shelving units that are 5 or 6 feet tall for regular things other than shoes. With wheels on them so you can move them. Also when each shelf has metal caging you can see down below what there is.
You can get plastic shelves for lighter things. Dont have to worry about getting wood chips in your nails.

I've bought the metal shelving units in the past, the cheap ones for the shed. I wound fibre around the metal posts and they looked great. Lots of options if you don't want to spend a fortune.

I like to have a backing board on bookcases.. stops stuff falling out the back & looks tidier.

Two bricks and a plank. You can build them up as high as you want

I like Ikea bookshelves. I have lots of them. Not so many books now that I have a kindle though.

I had one just like that, Clair.
Editing this to add the comma. Without it it looks like I used Clair for a bookcase.

Sometimes they only have a backboard on every second shelf.
