What happened to their hands do you think?

Re: What happened to their hands do you think?

Todays SMH - read the last paragraph for an excellent example of hogwash.......or gobbledegook (love that word)

Senator Johnston dodged every question about why there should be no proper investigation into the allegations against those he called his heroes.

''When you give me something to act upon that is more than just hearsay, innuendo and rumour, we will cross that bridge when we come to it,'' he offered, saying he'd spoken to senior command and had been told there was nothing to the allegations.

And when confronted with Fairfax's report of an extensive interview with the asylum seeker who acted as interpreter on the boat in question, and who insisted he'd seen with his own eyes the alleged mistreatment, Senator Johnston dismissed the claims as a ''small number of misbehaviours''.

When asked why Defence hadn't previously answered questions posed by Fairfax on the issue, Senator Johnston fobbed off responsibility altogether.

''Border protection, with over 50,000 people on 800 boats coming in, in four years, is a civil public policy issue,'' he declared. ''It is not a military exercise. We need military skills, we need military logistics and capability, but it is a civil public policy problem. Immigration and border protection need to be kept in the context of a civil public policy output.''

An astonishing performance.

Re: What happened to their hands do you think?

Thats nice of you to accept the writings of Mike Carlton as proof, however...........the writings of one journo and flat denials from the Govt are a little meaningless........surely an indpendent investigation would be more appropriate

Boris, You have jumped to a conclusion......nowhere did I mention that I took Mike Carlton's writings as proof., or give a personal opinion on the issue.

It was a cut and paste of one person's reporting which I thought was interesting in view of the TV interview with the asylum seeker.

And yes, I think there should be an independent investigation of the matter.

Public Release of Hot Issue Briefs

The Black Review of the Defence Accountability Framework challenged Defence to enhance individual and collective accountability. Placing on the public record Defence's advice to the Minister for Defence on these issue - including instances of inappropriate behaviour - is a part of that accountability.

From 20 January 2012, Hot Issue Briefs will be released on the Defence Website, usually within one week after submission to the Minister. The only exceptions to that rule will be individually and personally approved by the Secretary of the Department of Defence or the Chief of the Defence Force, and based solely on criteria that public release would:

  • endanger operational outcomes,
  • prejudice legal proceedings, or
  • impede or frustrate ADF Investigative Service or civil police investigations.

In those circumstances, the Secretary or the Chief of the Defence Force will be required to set an expiration date on the information in that Hot Issue Brief, after which time the brief will be publicly released.

This approach is consistent with the key changes to the Freedom of Information Act 1982 that came into effect on 1 November 2010, and the Information Publication Scheme.

Re: What happened to their hands do you think?

http://theaimn.com/2014/02/13/navy-not-above-suspicion/comment-page-1/

In the cult movie, “The Blues Brothers” there is a car chase; possibly the best car chase ever filmed. Such is the chaos being wrought by Jake and Elwood Blues on the freeways leading into Chicago that just about every police car in the force is out on the road determined to capture them. At a critical point in the chase and with the reputation of the force on the line, the officer in the radio room issues the instruction,

“The use of unnecessary force has been approved.”

When the first of the allegations of cruelty by Australian naval personnel against asylum seekers was reported by the ABC, I was sceptical. That is not what we do, I thought.

That can’t be true.

But subsequent to those alleged New Year’s Day events, a claim surfaced that there existed within the Navy a group linked to the Australian Defence League, an online racist group opposed to Muslim immigration into Australia.

The Navy is currently investigating one of its members who posted a comment on a friend’s Facebook page stating: “I’m about to head out today to deal with these f—ers.”

This was first reported by Bianca Hill in The Age on 26th January.

Then came Michael Bachelard’s article in the Age and Sydney Morning Herald newspapers on February 6th and the interview with Yousif Ibrahim Fasher in Indonesia, which gave credibility to the allegation that Navy personnel had mistreated asylum seekers.

That article reignited this shadowy matter and gave more weight to the ABC’s original story.

Secretly, the Abbott government knows it is in trouble. It knows it is vulnerable on the issue of naval engagement with asylum seekers so what does it do?

It tries to divert attention by focusing on the unions where it believes Labor is vulnerable. It announces a Royal Commission into Union corruption.
