What is worse?

Those that overstay their visa that fly in (majority)

or

Those that arrive by boat.......with the possibily of seeking asylum (unlikely) and sent back.

I generally keep up with what is going on and don't understand the governments fixation with boats when the numbers are the clear minority.

Not necessarily, I don't believe that you ever KNOW anyone. I believe there is good and bad everywhere and it comes down to luck most of the time. What I disagree with is the way the public is being brainwashed against those seeking asylum when there are crooked residents and citizens in all walks of life in this country. Survival is a strong instinct among us all. We are all equal.

Fake passports - it is much harder (is it even possible?) now to make fake passports if they are e-passports. The persons face is digitially recorded in the passport, measurements between the eyes recorded etc. If an identical twin presents with their other twin's passport they would be detected.

I suppose a lot of the countries the people are fleeing from don't have e-passports.

There are 4 million people entering Australia on visa's every year, 1/2% may overstay.. for 1 day even and get recorded.

That is a big number of people  who are good and behaving as required by their visa conditions.

Commit a crime as a visa overstayer and you will be deported. Commit a  major crime as someone who has lived here for many years but is not an Australian citizen and get deported.

I don't see the problem.

I don't believe that it is the desperate that they are trying to target, I believe that it is the possibility of the ones who may be up to no good. I believe it's about limiting loopholes.

uh huhm and sure there may be 20 people on their boaT IN GENUINE NEED OF ASYLUM, BUT HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THE SMUGGLER DOESN'T HAVE  (oops sorry) bad intentions/connections and makes a few places on his boat for a few of his mates who may also be a bit dodgy?

But here's the thing Donna, the people that are alreadybhere, they are our responsibility, even the really bad ones.

But we at least have a track record. when a policeman checks my drivers licence he can work out if I am wanted for any crimes, or if I've done bad stuff, and no doubt there are agencies checking out my bank accounts and phone records etc and the people I associate with and their connections yada yada yada

You're blaming the wrong people. It's the naughty people that the governments are trying tio protecvt us from, they're the ones who make it so that those with genuine intentions get caught as a by product.

This is a bit weird isn't it? Including people BORN in NZ arriving in Australia (they can come and go freely) with people from other countires arriving on humanitarian programs.
