To me the fear of drowning might stop me, you would have to be extremely desperate wouldn't you?

something that might make me think twice in getting on one coming here would be actually meeting some of the aussie's that wrap themseleves in the australian flag and then talk about other's as if they are less than human, etc.

That's it! That is why there has been a slow-down in attempts for three weeks. They are waiting until after next Monday.

I don't think the boats are leaky when they leave. They damage the boats when Australian ships are near to rescue them, or they ring tripple 0 even when still in Indonesian waters.

If you are that desperate for a better life for your children, I imagine you would do whatever you can.
If you have nothing left - no country, no material possessions, no land, no family - then what fear would you have of a perilous journey.
If the choice is between definitely being killed if you are forced back to your own country as opposed to maybe drowning, then I suppose the choice is clear - you have little choice.
So how do they pay the people smugglers? And their familes are already here telling them how good it is.
Why do we go around in circles on this? It's not hard to figure out.
I imagine a lot of money changes hands between familes to get the strongest on a boat,

We go in circles because both sides of this debate think they are right. Nor is it not hard to figure out - the money is coming from their family members already here that our government kindly gives them for nothing... although its nowhere near $1k a week or all the other perks aforementioned.

Seeing Donna sitting in the back with her floaties on lol.

and meanwhile, the truly desperate, hungry, ill and dying are still languishing in displaced persons camps. They don't have the money to go anywhere, much less head for Australia. How nice it would be if the money spent dissuading fit young men from arriving on our shores were to be spent feeding the powerless ones.

"What would it take to stop you getting on a leaky boat?"
I don't know. Had we not fled a landlocked country maybe my parents would have taken a boat option. Having to witness your friends and colleagues being shot could well have been enough of an incentive.
There are many reasons people flee and being penniless is not a prerequisite to seeking refuge ... I'm sure there are people who fund their own trips ...
