However, paying people smugglers is reportedly an established practice dating back to 2010 under the Rudd government.

Considering that Australian government under Rudd, or Gillard, never turned boat back, they obviously were not paying the smugglers to smuggle people.  As i said, all governments, or their agents, pay various unsavory characters for info.  Always have done always will.

We already do. A large percentage of those now fighting for ISIL were on some form of disability pension.

Re: When is the government going to start paying terrorists?

oh lol - i get it now

Reports have emerged that under Labor, Australian spies paid Indonesian informers close to people smugglers as part of efforts to destroy the trade.

Mr Shorten said he would not comment on Australian Secret Intelligence Service matters and nor should any serious leader.

Labor is refusing to comment on reports people smugglers were given cash payments in 2010 when it was in government.

Shadow Assistant Treasurer Andrew Leigh told Sky News, Labor did not pay to turn boats around but refused to say if people smugglers were paid in any circumstances.

'It would not be responsible for me to go into details', he said.

Labor did not have a turn back policy so payments would not have been made explicitly to turn back boats under the Rudd/Gillard government.

However, paying people smugglers is reportedly an established practice dating back to 2010 under the Rudd government.
