Why I Pick Woolies!

From today, Woolworths customers nationwide will have the option of purchasing paper shopping bags to carry their shopping home in.

The new carry bags, which were trialed successfully at a number of Woolworths stores last year, have been introduced to meet growing customer demand for alternatives which can be easily recycled in household curbside collection.

Made from 70 percent recycled paper, the bags will be sold at cost for 20 cents, in addition to the supermarket’s existing reusable plastic bags and Bag for Good options.

All paper used has been sourced responsibly, as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, with non-recycled paper used in conjunction with recycled paper to provide a stronger structure. The bags have been tested to carry up to 6kg worth of groceries.

Woolworths Supermarkets Managing Director Claire Peters said: ”While the vast majority of our customers bring their own bags, we know customers sometimes drop by a store unplanned or can forget their bags when they’re on the run.

”For some time, customers have told us they’d like the option of a strong paper bag option, so we’re pleased to now offer that choice at our checkouts, alongside our existing reusable plastic bags.

Well there ya go!

Back to the old days (1970s, when I was a checkout-chick) before plastic shopping bags, when we used to use our own bags or paper sacks to take our groceries home. Or have them delivered.

I'm really liking that Woolies is offering the recycled paper bags option.

Customers looking to reduce the use of plastic bags when purchasing fruit and vegetables will also have an alternative from today. Reusable nylon produce bags will be available for purchase in a pack of three for $4, the bags are specifically designed to be compatible with Woolworths checkout scales and will be conveniently stationed in the fruit and vegetables section of all Woolworths Metros and select supermarkets.

Plans are underway to extend the option of paper bags to Woolworths' online customers for home delivery and Pick Up.

I'm particularly interested in the online option.

Thanks for posting, Icy

Re: Why I Pick Woolies!

Think again,

Woolworths has confirmed to 7NEWS.com.au that the bags have always been made in both China and Vietnam as “we're unable to manufacture paper bags at the scale we need in Australia at this time”. The “Made in Vietnam” paper bags have since created confusion on Facebook.

Re: Why I Pick Woolies!

The announcement by Woolies says the paper bags are 'sourced responsibly'

Nothing mentioned about locally

Yeah well. Yep. On closer inspection ,the paper bags show as 'Made in Vietnam'

I mean, really?

Austtrlalia needs to wake up to itself.

Can we really not use our own waste paper to recycle into shopping bags?

Re: Why I Pick Woolies!

If we send all the paper for recycling overseas, how do we make anything if it ain't here?

Or is our waste paper going to other countries to be recycled and sold back to us so we can feel good about using our waste product ?

At our expense?

Our waste is being sent overseas to be recycled and sent back to us at a profit as a usable product.

No wonder we're seen as the "dumb blondes" of the Asia Pacific.

Re: Why I Pick Woolies!

The plastic produce bags have been available in my Woolies for yonks.

I don't buy them. The free ones are still available and they get at least a second life as freezer bags.
