I'm not a fan of the idea of driverless cars mixing it with human drivers, I think we're going to have to move to a different model, with car or carrying pods moving along some sort of electronic tracks.

They won't have to go slowly.Smiley Happy We won't need a person walking in front waving a red flag.

I don't think I'll live long enough to see it all which is a pity, I don't love driving.

dont we have those allready, we call them trams and trains. and they are resonably safe, the odd bad train derailments and tram accidents.

No, we absolutely don't have them at the moment. Trams & trains are hampered by the fact they can't go an individualised route. Imagine if you like, a small 'car' for want of a better word, that seats about 4. imagine it can be programmed with a destination & travel along the road tracks, all controlled by computers, & where everyone else is in a similar 'car'.

That once you get to wherever you are going, the car might move off to someone else in the area.

Of course, there will be inconveniences & if the computer network dropped out or was damaged, it would be chaotic. But then again, we're already in that scenario with banks etc. In the event of an electro magnetic pulse, if bank computer records were wiped out, we would have no records of ownership, no record of loans or accounts. I  know they are deep underground for that reason. yet we haven't let that risk stop us from changing to electronic banking. But I can't see our reliance on computers & electronics fading out anytime soon.

The fact theThe fact there has bere has been a death in a driverless car......there are deaths every day from cars with human drivers. Do we demand that they be banned?

Nothing stays the same forever. The days of petrol etc are running out & the world will move on. There will probably be a lot more deaths along the way, same as there were in the early days of flying.

thats the real problem, i dont think people will accept driverless cars because we need someone to blame in the event of a problem.

did you see that #%@&% so'n'so? he cut me off!

i'm going to get even! watch as i pass him, slam on my brakes and give him the finger!

what would be the point with a driverless car?

as for injury or death, who you gunna sue? a computer glitch?

no, we have to have a driver so we have someone to blame.

There are already driverless trains of some sort. Not your everyday trains.

I am sure in the event of an accident the company running them would be in trouble-maybe maintenance issues would be looked at etc

Driverless cars, same. If all the cars were driverless along tracks, perhaps different companies would be responsible for running them in different areas. We already have roads and tollways under private ownership & I would see this going the same way.

but none of them mix driverless with real drivers.

real drivers make lots of mistakes but also auto correct quickly in most but not all cases.

oops, shoulda waited longer before entering that intersection. oops, forgot i need to go left i'll just pull a u-turn here where i'm not supposed to.

people are mostly ok drivers, get to point B from point A without killing or maiming anyone.

but mixing them up with vehicles with no 'on board' eyes beyond cameras and proximity alarms, i cant see it working.

i dont believe a camera is ever going to be as good as real eyes. real eyes see so much more than a camera, and the real brain takes the eyes information and figures out what is and what isnt important when driving.

like maybe a cyclist riding in between cars as they often do, or pedestrians running across the road without looking.or just someone switching lanes without care.

driving is prolly the most complex activity the ordinary person will do in daily life. and its our eyes, ears and brain that work together to make that activity not a disaster. actually prolly all our senses are used.

a computer only has limited 'sensors'

I think that is the crux. The day is coming when they will all be driverless & perhaps all controlled in a different way to how they are now.
