I know there may be compassionate cases but these people are not holidaymakers seeking to return. They are people who were living or working overeas or visiting family and they can shelter in place.
The cost of lockdowns here is too high a price for us to be expected to pay and our whole community should not be expected to put everything at risk for the sake of a few.
Vaccinate before returning. Or stay over there.
I think that is an over simplistic view of the situation regarding Australians wishing to return from overseas. Yes, they may well have been living and working overseas before the pandemic and may have taken the Federal Government's advice at the time to stay where they were as long as they were safe BUT that was a year ago now. Contracts for employment and tenancy do expire and those people are now often in very vulnerable positions with no work, no income and nowhere to live.

The situation in India is terrible. Nobody knows the number of infected or dead. They are burning bodies in mass numbers, yet the Government is still permitting millions of people to bathe in the Ganges. Over 40 countries are now coming to their aid. The Indian strain of Covid is a double mutant variant and it is unclear how this may affect the human immune system. It is also unclear if the Covid vaccines will be effective against the variant. Spooky times and the rest of the world needs to manage the risks carefully.

Even though the figures given by Dr. McCullough (in an interview in November last year) were 800 per million for the US and 100 per million for India don't exactly match yours, it's plainly obvious that something is amiss when a first world country has higher casualties than an overcrowded country with a larger poor class.
I would like to go more in depth to discuss this but sadly it's not really possible here nowadays.

Look, the main reason we can't have proper discussions here is due to the actions of a a few. People get attacked and bullied here. A couple of well-respected members, icyfroth and chameleon54 have spoken out about this. Myself and a couple of others have too. It's sad because this subject deserves a better exploration but a certain clique don't allow this kind of exploration. So debate and intelligent discussion gets stifled!

How do the figures of infection rates per million people from November 2020 relate to the banning of flights from India in April/May 2021?
How do the infection rates from November 2020 compare to the situation India finds itself in in April 2021?
Any analysis of current figures is infinitely more relevant than figures from November 2020.
I know the OP gave some figures, but that was to try to support the position that flights from the USA should be stopped.
This thread is not about infection rates in first and third world countries . . . it’s about why flights from India have been paused til May 15th.
Come on, we can have a civilised adult discussion about this (well I know I can), don’t back away now.

I think the world knows what was amiss that led to the USA having abysmally higher rates than India . . . it was leadership, or lack thereof.
Draw a line through the USA response from January 20th onwards and you’ll see that they are doing much better now than pre-inauguration days . . . even starting from such an appalling position. Some of it is due to vaccinations, but much of it comes down to leadership.
The situation in the USA came down to “Red states/Blue states” and the unwillingness of many to risk getting on Trump’s bad side. One of the first things Biden did after being sworn in was to sign an executive order mandating mask wearing on all federal property. Biden can’t mandate mask wearing in each state as decisions on that are state decisions, but he could take action and make a rule for federal buildings and property. He has always seemed to lead by example in his approach to dealing with the virus spread whereas the previous clown president was more interested in fueling conspiracy theories and populist decision making.

you seem to have made the decision to not engage with me some time back, yet I have tried to have proper discussions with you on a variety of topics for weeks now . . . but you won’t engage. I’m not baiting you, I’m trying to have a sensible, mature, adult discussion and haven’t asked you anything that would demonstrate disrespect.
The only reason debate and intelligent discussion is stifled on this thread is your reluctance to participate in debate and intelligent discussion with posters like me.
Come on, let’s have a discussion (I won’t bite).

Regarding the stopping of flights from India but not from some other countries also with high numbers of cover cases..........
The number of passengers flying into Darwin from India and testing positive for covid during their quarantine in Howard Springs has become unacceptable. The rates are vastly higher than passengers coming from other countries. These passengers are meant to have tested negative for covid before boarding the planes but it is patently obvious that either the testing done in India is faulty or the passengers are buying false negative tests to allow them to fly. Either way, although the quarantine procedures at Howard Springs are excellent, the number of positive cases in such a small population as Darwin is becoming an unacceptable risk.
