My views in Feb. I think this suggested approach is still the best way to proceed. We now have 1 million doses of the AZ vaccine produced here per week Let’s inoculate at-risk Australians then send Covid vaccines overseas

In photos I see where Covid is still spreading widely (India, Europe, Americas) eye protection seems to be often missing. You need eye protection eg with face shields, as well as wearing a mask. For SARS-CoV-2: eye protection is a missing key element

100% - urgent need for vaccine supplies to go up in the region. Fiji, Timor Leste, PNG in the Indo-Pacific region amongst other countries have increasing cases. vaccination will be one of the most helpful tools in slowing the spread & increasing donations in the region needed.

I should mention that although I find the comment objectively offensive, I refuse to take offence at it. Internet accusations of that sort - non-specific, unsupported - are best not taken personally, and that is the way that I will handle that particular contumely.

I remain open to discussion but am increasingly of the view that at least one reason why you speak of an inability to engage in proper discussion is that you won't address an argument (i.e., debate, discussion) in a spirit of exchange. I'm sorry that you're not willing to engage in that sense.

The topic of this thread is certainly creating passionate defences or accusations in the news as we speak, and both sides of the argument have compelling aspects. In my view it cannot have been an easy decision for the government, and isn't a permanent one. Certainly improvements in quarantine are something many of us are advocating. As said (just briefly), the issue is currently risk assessment leading to risk mitigation, which is standard in an infection control process.

Take the widely-used for many years hydroxychlorquine for example. It is used in ongoing treatment for various medical conditions. For Covid 19 treatment, the does are different and the course much more shorter than for other conditions. It is not used on its own and another two  or so drugs are used plus  mineral and vitamins supplements. Steroid treatment is incorporated. Take ongoing booster vaccines and potentially other vaccines for variants etc., I wonder who's really going to "make" out of a very cheaply produced proven effective drug which is just one component of a prescribed treatment. I don't see mega buck$$$ being made here! Perhaps elsewhere!

The main thing is to get the people home. Quarantine can make the process possible. First an incompetent admin needs to be pulled into line.

The decision that was announced today is partly based on the numbers of returned travellers from India who are testing positive in hotel quarantine.

Also, the predictions are that within a week the (official) daily new case count will exceed 500,000 AND the health care system is already stretched beyond maximum capacity.

The other thing to think about is the accuracy of the case count.  I think that in most of the countries with high counts that the real count is higher than the reported count.  With the high population in India it is quite possible that the daily count is already much higher than the 300,000+ that is reported.

If India doesn’t get some control over the spread of the virus they will catch the USA in total cases in a matter of months.

That is why flights from India are being ‘paused’ until 15th May.
