Re: Why do people get personal?

I find it quite baffling that people can get so uptight about things said to them on a public chat board. If the nastiness spills over into real life - abusive phone calls, letters to places of employment, false reports to authorities etc. then I agree it's worrying and something needs to be done about it, but when someone you don't have much respect for anyway calls you names or attempts to insult you in a thread on CS then really, what can you do but laugh?  (BTW my mother is still doing unspeakable things to bears in the forest - and in French, too!)

I don't even know how people  tell if a poster is uptight

GSE, It can matter if comments are untrue, or meant to be bullying, and are ongoing.

The whole world can read it if they feel like it, and form an impression of the people involved.

This is no different to any other form of social media.

it's hard to judge mood imo unless there is bad language and such .I often find others judging and posting about what they believe is another posters mood kind of trollish

But it's not the same as, say, Facebook is it, because most of us don't have all our family and RL friends on here? Besides, my RL friends and family and also the firends I have made on here know me for who and what i am - why on earth should I lose any sleep  if people I have never met, am never likely to meet and in whom, I have no more than a casual  passing interest choose to spread or believe lies about me or attempt to 'bully' me.
