Why is Bureau of Met manipulating data re Cyclone Marcia ?

They said it was a Cat 5 cyclone, yet all the wind speeds, sustained and gusts show that it was only a Cat 3.

In addition, the pressure level never got down to a Cat 5.

And regardless of the better building codes compared to Darwin/Tracy in 1974, the damage was no where near a Cat 5.

For a start, the trees still had leaves on them. In all the Cat 5 cyclones in the last 30 years, no trees had leaves

left on them.

In addition, "Data for Middle Percy Island has disappeared from the BOM site, but Jennifer Marohasy kept a copy.

(I’m sure the BOM will be grateful!)..."

Have a read of this.

IN ADDITION

It seems some of the media outlets wewre dissapointed that the damage wasn't worse. That was the impression I got.

Almost like Disaster porn.

Any comments ?

A conspiracy by BOM and banana growers to jack up the price.I'd check BOM's employees to see if they have shares in Chiquita

What about NT.? No one seems to mention that one at all.

A rose by another name . . .

it was a very strong wind which blew down lots of houses and destroyed a lot of property.

These things happen from time to time in certain places in the world. Just like bushfires burn down houses and property on a fairly regular if not entirely predictable time scale.

But . . . if people continue to re-build cyclone prone structures in known cyclone prone areas or if they continue to re-build flammable houses in known bushfire prone areas, then how can they complain when their houses get burnt down or blown away?

(or drowned by flood or eaten by termites or fall into chasms opened up by earthquake-riven pits)

Stupidity is said to be continuing to do the same thing yet expecting a different result.

Luckily for the lazy and/or the stupid, there are insurance companies who will gamble their own survival on the non-occurrence of historically statistically predictable events.

A harsh and simplistic view.

Cruel but fair?

it's a realistic viewpoint.

People who live in say, North Qld (and I lived there for quite a few years) should recognise that every few years or so a cyclone will visit a town near them and they would be wise to build their houses with that in mind.

Same for people who live in bushfire prone areas. When I drive through the Adelaide hills, I am amazed by those who are brave enough or foolish enough to build wooden houses with wood shingle roofs and surround their houses with close up in their face trees.

After the big fire in 198? early 80's when lots of houses in the hills burned down, the insurance companies increased their fire insurance rates for everybody in the Adelaide district, whether we lived in the hills or not.

So, the people who lived in the plains had to subsidise the insurance of those who lived in the hills.

And they still build wooden houses with wooden roofs in the Adelaide hills.

Yes, I am harsh with stupid and selfish people who endanger the rest of us economically and who endanger the lives of the SES who they expect to save them when their wooden houses eventually fall to their designed and designated inevitable fate.

So, the people who lived in the plains had to subsidise the insurance of those who lived in the hills.

And those of us living on top of hills pay extra in case of flooding that would be an impossibility here. My insurance premium almost doubled after suburbs 50km away, and several hundred metres lower than us, flooded a few years back.

The BOM are useless, there are far more accurate weather forecasters out there. Doesnt surprise me they are tampering with the data to produce figures that suit them, its no different to what political parties (all of them) do to budget/debt/jobless figures to get the result that fits their agenda.

There were predictions of this summer being our worst bushfire season yet, but we've barely even had a summer. They've pulled out that prediction every year since the Black Saturday fires. Scaremongering.
