I'll throw this one out there for the ladies.
What about when a woman is married to more than one husband at a time, polyandry ?

Thought this was quite funny.

You can say that again.
When Neaderthals met whoever, you can be sure that rape, pillage and plunder occurred.
I agree monogomy is only a recent thing.
I guess it depends how you define "polygamy". If we are talking about person being married to more than one people, or a person having number of flings without any emotional ties.
Life is all about propagating, and the species who manage to do it best survive. In some species the young do not require long term nurturing, but humans do. Monogamy (man taking care of just one woman and her children) was the best way for humans to prosper. But now that is no longer the case. Many people find that serial monogamy is what suits them best.

I tried that cereal monogamy and I got tired of Frosted Flakes pretty fast.

It can only be polygomy if marriage is involved....as far as I know?
Which is why I don't quite get the reference to animals and cavemen, there are/were no marriages involved in these groups, so it can not be called polygamy.
Any more than adultory can be classed as polygamy unless you have actually married more than one partner.
And then I guess it would be a matter of each to his own.......

I also took the subject of this topic to be about polygamous marriage. Sleeping with many partners is not polygamy, that is promiscuity.
