Why would any young person do this?

Work for Abbotts "Green Army" for $10 an hour when the minimum youth wage in Australia is around $18 an hour?

No, not permanent jobs which is what is needed, and certainly not 15 000 jobs.

Re: Why would any young person do this?

COST

" The Coalition’s Green Army will begin with 250 projects in 2014-15, building up to 1,500 projects in 2018-19.

By 2018-19, it is estimated that there will be a standing force of 15,000 people who will be taking part in the Green Army each year.

The Coalition’s Green Army will cost up to $50 million in the first year starting on 1 July 2014 and $300 million over the forward estimates period (with total costs capped at a maximum of $300 million).

It is expected that this will provide for over 1,500 Green Army projects over the forward estimates period."

Re: Why would any young person do this?

Only people that dont like this scheme are the welfare and hand out mentality and the left/socialist/greens

Lets see.

The workers would be paid between $10 to $16 an hour while engaged in the project, less than minimum wage but higher than the Newstart or Youth Allowance rate and it's in line with trainee wages.

and

They not only earn the funds, but most significantly the work skills, and hopefully they'll come out of it with certificates and occupational health and safety training and first aid training," he said.

and ecven more benifits

The project will include pest animal management and the monitoring of threatened local animal species.

Workers will be able to obtain certificate I and II qualifications in various environmental fields for their efforts.

Getting paid to get TAFE certificate I and II qualifications....

But the left and handout mentality hate this..... as expected.

Nero - This doesn't state they will complete a Cert I or Cert II by the end of their 6 mths in the Green Army.

"The work a person undertakes as part of a Green Army programme would normally be counted toward the requirements of a training course such as a Certificate 1 or 2 in land management, park management, landscaping or horticulture."
http://www.liberal.org.au/creating-green-army

Cert I and Cert II are pretty lame quals theses days. Even Cert III. There are thousands of job applicants with them who have no work experience. Ever seen a job advt. for a cert qual only, no experience necessary?

I notice office job vacancy ads, that used to require Cert III in Business Admin, now they require Cert IV. That is just for a basic office job.

and hopefully they'll come out of it with certificates

Hopefully? He doesn't know?

Whilst his media spin is making much of Cert 1 and 11, the department that is running the program makes it clear in their fact sheets that the course will only provide POSSIBLE points towards Cert courses in (as yet unidentified) other tertiary courses.

They are not getting a TAFE qualification.

They are working for 6 months for below miniumum salary with little to show for it at the end except the POSSIBILITY that they might get some credit points towards a course that TAFE has yet to be involved in.

Re: Why would any young person do this?

It's a good idea as long as the young person is still living at home.. Good luck paying rent, electricity and buying food on $10 an hour..

The whole mentality surrounding unempoyed people sucks..

Re: Why would any young person do this?

ref

people do it because they believe they will get a job out of it, they won't because the jobs aren't there.

Who do I blame for the lack of jobs ?

I blame the free trade agreements our Australian Parliament endorses in bipartisanship.

and as am3 pointed out this is only a (silly) plan to 'employ' (slave labour) 15,000 young unemployed when the figures show that there are 257,000 (and growing) unemployed in Australia.

ref

$10 p.h. x 40hrs a week x 26 weeks x 15 000 participants (by 2018) = $? Per 6 mths
