ref ............These kids are getting paid and getting training
......................................................................................................................................................................
NOT being offered a long term job with a FAIR PAY for a good days work ...........
Being paid below Federal minimum wage.............
....and err....'trained' to do what with prospects to go on to do what exactly?

Apart from this re-introduced loser idea of working for the dole programme being unimaginative and a proven 'fail' many, many times by previous govts it is obviously NOT to assist or serve the unemployed youth of Australia.
Why has this Govt slashed and burned many, many training, apprecticeship and business incentive schemes in the last 10 months ?

Speaking in general terms and in reply to no one in particular.
Of course basically, everybody needs a purpose. A purpose to get out of bed every day. A routine that is better than lolling around and perhaps getting into mischief.
To be alongside others working towards a goal. Even if it's to clear weeds in a designated area or improve a visual sight/site. A team effort. Everyday. Work ethics. What is needed for most jobs/employment. In any field.
Certificate or not. The work is worthwhile for both personal value and environmental value.
A person's attitude, possible leadership qualities, team player, etc. can all be observed and reported on whilst undergoing the duties. What is wrong with that?
They are learning something. Whatever is learnt is not wasted.

Lets wait and see. Only one person I have ever met who has done work for the dole found it of any value, in any sense.

Quite philosophical a comment but I think our young unemployed would rather leave the philosophy and just have a :
1. real and decent job
2. that pays a fair rate....................sounds very real to me.

Although the program is billed as a great training opportunity for young people, there is no requirement for the providers to give the participants any formal sort of training in the form of a traineeship or apprenticeship.
Despite this, the workers in the Green Army program will be paid less than the minimum wage, with rates sets at between $10.14 and $16.45 an hour, based on the training wage.
On top of that, they won’t be able to receive their Youth Allowance while they’re on the program, and will be required to work full-time hours, leaving them no time to attend interviews or participate in job search activities.
Even more concerning, the government has moved to pass a Bill that will exclude the workers from coverage under the Fair Work Act, meaning they’re not entitled to the usual rights to annual leave, public holidays, or protection from being unfairly dismissed or discriminated against in the workplace.
It also looks like they might fall through the cracks of our workplace health and safety scheme, because guess what? The government is exempting them from Australia’s work health and safety laws too!
If this is truly a genuine training opportunity for Australia’s young, then why not put them on a proper traineeship with the possibility of a real job at the end of it?

and:
A clever act of switcheroo
To pay for the $525 million program over the next four years, the Coalition has engaged in a clever act of switcheroo, by axing about $484 million from the Landcare budget.

they cut funding for most environmental programmes, they have no plan, no vision, nothing but punishment and rubbish "army" schemes to nowhere. Wonder if abbott is considered a "do gooder parent" what's the opposite of a "do gooder parent", see i have learnt something today - a new nonsense term. (i will forget it soon though).
