I have had this discussion twice in the last week, so I will open it up for discussion here too. Am I just unlucky or have workplaces changed over the last 30 years?
Very little teamwork - it would seem it's everyman (or woman) for themselves. I don't understand it, maybe its time to retire.

Worked the past 16 years for a family company with a HQ and 11 stores.
In the automotive trade.
Less than a month ago taken over by a large overseas corp.
The OHS paperwork is a joke--keeps folks in a job.
Wont retire -the work car is handy--accounting for every kilometre used
is a pain-but now has to be done...........................................Richo.

hi
yes it has changed alot
lots just do what they have too so they get paid they actually dont want to be there
i can tell when i call a business or go in person if thats their attitude
and they dont even learn what they sell or anything
they dont work as a team player, they just want their day to end
in all the jobs ive worked i made it my business to know the ins and outs of everything my job involved so i worked better and
more efficiently
and always helped other staff as much as i could.i feel you should work hard for a good days pay
but thats just my opinion lol tara

Sad but true Meh. As an employer I can't believe how people now just expect to be paid top dollar for just turning up. I've had a really difficult time over the past few years with staff who are constantly taking time off, on their mobile, won't do what they are required to do and spend the majority of their time texting. Grrrr. luckily I do have some staff who are passionate and I reward them for their passion and loyalty.
I've had to put off 2 staff over the past 12 months simply because they were just slack and couldn't see why I would have a problem with them having most monday's off, to recover from the weekend, and why I insisted that they not txt during work hours. I had already banned facebook because the young ones seem to not be able to survive if they don't check in every 5 minutes.
I think I'm a fair employer, pay well and am very much of the give and take mindset. But nowadays many people are simply of the take mindset and in a small business it just doesn't work. Mind you when you get someone who is willing to put in to the business, not just work wise but with their thoughts and ideas, then you hang on to them like gold because they are rare.

I think it is the 8 hour shift mentality, it breeds a whole class of clock watchers.
They know that no matter how unproductive they are that when 5pm comes they still get to go home, regardless of whether their workmates have gotten through their work or even if they have finished their own. There is just no incentive for teamwork.
In a situation where you are salary, you know you can't go home until yours and everyone else's job is done, so it's all hands on deck until everything is done.
The clock watcher mentality also has an effect on the quality of the staff that you attract as well.
